Self Learning System present their very first record and deliver a new label focussing on conceptual work as well as interdisciplinary art in full effect. 

They believe in the human mind as a self-learning system - creators and originators connected all around the globe aiming to keep the scene alive. They want to cultivate a community and platform for exchange with other artists pursuing music, design, art, and events. 

Their first strike comes as “The Arrival Of Unisex & Ernst”, a split EP of the two label heads to introduce themselves and the sound of SLS. The record contains six analog hardware tools ranging from classic Electro to Industrial.

On February 25th, Palms Out will release the first in a series of compilations on cassette and digital. Titled plainly: "End Broken Windows", 100% of the proceeds of the series will go to charity in an effort to raise awareness about broken windows policing methods. Specifically, I hope this project contributes in some small way to spreading the word about the ways in which policing and prosecuting low-level offenses serves only as a way of terrorizing and traumatizing vulnerable populations, without achieving the intended goal of preventing violent crime. The theoretical premise of broken windows policing is fundamentally flawed, and woefully misguided -- there is no evidence that focusing police power on low level violations like sex work, loitering, minor vandalism, petit theft, minor drug offenses, etc. leads to any reduction in violent crime. The practice must end.

Each volume of the series will benefit a different charity doing work to counteract the effects of broken windows policing; all it really does is criminalize being black, trans, queer, young, unhoused, etc. The first volume will benefit the SBB National Sex Worker Bail Fund (swopbehindbars.org/donate). Sex workers are often intersectionally and inordinately affected by broken windows policing, and should never be forced to spend a single night in jail merely for exercising agency over their own bodies.

Musically and conceptually, this record is inspired by a place where broken windows policing is disproportionately felt: the subway/metro. I gave all of the artists the vague prompt to write music inspired by the NYC subway system -- and the results were expectedly varying. For this volume, I pursued artists who have been generally exploring midtempo dance music without focus on 4 to the floor drum patterns. The result was a collection of largely breakbeat-oriented songs, some with direct classic NYC & Detroit electro references, others with more melodic and euphoric UK hardcore inspiration, and others still that kind of split the difference between modern bass and Baltimore club (for lack of better descriptors).

Lloyd Stellar X The Droid - Rise Of The Machines is an exciting debut collaboration between Erik Griffioen & Ben Evans. An impressive EP, loaded with cutting edge electro brimming with musicality, sound design and expert production.

Kicking off the release comes the title track ‘Rise Of The Machines’, this quirky yet nuanced excursion sets the pace, allowing its nifty ricocheting sequences, slick 808s, and tripped out ear candy to hit the clubs.‘Prisoners’ features a wiggly bass led jam, plastered with synths and finished with a dash of vocoded vocals.

Onto the flip side - ‘Room and Pillar’ grabs the bull by the horns with a tough and aggressive bass line driven banger. Shrieking, twisted synth lines and FX are shattered across the track, keeping tension levels peaking, while TR808 rhythms cut through with military precision. Contrasting ‘The Neutral Zone’ sucks us into a deep atmospheric orbit of blissful yet inquisitive FM synthesis, distant emotive pads, fortified by warm stately bass tones.

PREMIERE // Dexorcist - Cobotic Manipulators [Hilltown Disco]

DJ Different’s alter ego Terra Form explores the artist’s tougher, uncompromising self; creating music that meets the needs of the dance-floor with the added ability to load us all into hyper-space. It’s electro but with an added sense of largeness, combining carefully selected sounds with rawness at the center. 

‘Agripinaa’ opens the EP with its commanding kick drums and mind-altering electronics, sending a signal for those willing enough to hear it. ‘Trinity’ then finds the perfect balance between grit and emotion; distorting naturally airy synths and proving that beauty can be found even in the most murky of sounds.

After the record's raucous opening, the ear-wiggling synths and wide-eyed electronics of ‘Hydraulics Chamber’ lure us back in, before the record takes a surprising turn - the stripped-back grooves of ‘XV-88’ show Terra Form’s ability to use only a few nuanced sounds in both a playful and endearing way, while leading us perfectly down the meandering path to the record's closing sequence. 

‘MasterBlaster’ couldn’t be a better suited name and covers almost all the bases. A time-shifting, kinetic overcast that’s both palpable and unapologetic. The Swedish based producer has never reached for the brakes since his career began, merging genres and melting minds. Now the age of Terra Form has well and truly begun.

NYC based singer, multi instrumentalist and prolific producer Heidi Sabertooth brings her experimental and grungy sound to the fore, with a fierce EP examining the grainiest textures in dance music. It’s been over three years since she brought her unique brand of raw techno to Lobster Theremin, and now Heidi deepens her relationship between art and modern-day living in a blend of controlled chaos.

Opening track ‘Screaming Into The Abyss’ does exactly that, with its use of muddled voices and melancholic allure, glued loosely together with vintage acid and the producer's deep love of hardware. There’s a playfulness to follow up ‘Slide Into My DM’, Hedi’s elements seemingly communicating telepathically in a game of mutant-chess. Grooves and otherworldly dynamics flux and spill while splashes of reverb make it anything but predictable.

B side opener ‘Pissed’ maintains this raw aesthetic, sounding both mechanical and free-flowing with its foreboding melodies, melting between heavy bass and screeching pads; remaining functional but full of beautiful, unconventional touches. The record comes to a close with title track ‘Insane In The Cat Brain’ a disorientated affair encapsulating the restlessness and uncertainty of our times, spearheaded by an artist never afraid to take risks.

South London based Electro act, Steven Allman, returns to Avoidant for his debut release with the label, the Abductors EP. Having cut his teeth on the London electro scene with his event Scan (run in conjunction with Sync 24) he recently appeared on the acclaimed Dark Planet VA back in 2021. With his first full release on Avoidant, Allman brings his unique take on Electro with a poised and balanced 4 tracker.

Title track track Abuctors is a fast paced and sci fi leaning affair complete with twisted vocals and mind bending synth work. Jam The Freq continues the attitude but brings a more ominous and darker sound and high definition drums patterns burst across a flurry of buzzing bass. Pushing roper Electro Funk is Senses that bounces through and showcases Allman’s classy sound design. Master Future closes out the EP with deep rooted 808 drum work, extra terrestrial computer controlled hooks and synth work and unique retrograde vocals.
