»sleepstep« is the first collaboration between raster-noton and dasha rush. the record‘s subtitle »sonar poems for my sleepless friends« describes its underlying concept – »sleepstep« is a trip through electronically alienated microcompositions and sound collages that, interwoven with text passages, aim at creating a dream-like atmosphere.

the stations of this journey are striving for oblivion of time, an immersion, a drifting in universal states – death, life, birth, grief, desire. the titles often appear to be raw sketches, fugitive, surreal short stories that rather want to break open than execute.

the musical arrangement, in this context, can be described as rather subtle and fragile. though electronically manipulated, no production technique is pushing itself to the fore. and though clichés are not dreaded, »sleepstep«, as a result, stays away from being cliché. the sonar poems for her sleepless friends are feminine, subtle and personal reports. a musical dream journey in the form of a classical concept record – an album that also stands in the tradition of ambient music.

dasha rush is already known as a techno dj and producer. here on »sleepstep«, she celebrates her alter ego. the cd version comes with a 32-pages booklet that also shows her photographic interest and includes the aforementioned poems written by her. furthermore there is 2 x 12" vinyl version.

The second installment of re Interpretations form Slam’s latest, critically acclaimed album Reverse Proceed sees Soma look to yet more highly regarded Techno artists to provide their reimagining’s of their favourite tracks from Reverse Proceed. Long time Soma collaborator Gary Beck makes a welcome return to the label alongside fellow Scottish upstarts Clouds and finally Dutch Techno wizard, Jeroen Search. Each brings their inimitable style to the project.

Gary Beck steps up first with his take on Catacoustics. His fiery brand of looped out Techno take the already tough Catacoustics into another realm. Gary comes out, all guns blazing using the original hook to great effect as it trips out over his ferocious kicks, thundering percussion and powerful dance floor groove.

Not shy of a fierce remix, the Clouds twosome give Resolved a thorough going over. One of the more ambient tracks from Reverse Proceed, the beatless, breathtaking original is well and truly given a proper workout by the young Scottish producers. Filtered, shaking percussion leads us into the analogue warmth of the Resolved pads. This light start rapidly gives way to a full on assault of rhythmic destruction as Clouds turn in a serious weapons grade Techno track. 

The influential figure of Jeroen Search closes off this EP in fine form with his version of Cirklon Bells. Widely regarded as a true innovator in Techno, Jeroen shows off his skills with this remix as he powers in with a straight out 909 workout infused with hypnotic synth hooks. Given the live treatment, Jeroen is able to keep things exciting with the remix and easily pulls out a highly addictive remix.

After releasing a string of driving, dancefloor-oriented singles on European labels Rush Hour and Hotflush, Brooklyn’s own Praveen Sharma aka Braille is keying up to release his debut LP, Mute Swan, on Friends of Friends this Spring. With an ear for sentimental melodies and an unprecedented step into the vocal arena, Braille’s first full-length is rife with narrative appeal and rich songwriting, collapsing dozens of genre signifiers into a cauldron of pathos. Sharma’s own vocal experiments are aided by Jessie Boykins III on “I Assume” and Angelica Bess on “Ports” and “Better Than Nothing”, as well as additional production from Throwing Snow and Seafloor, a symphony of voices feeding into the cohesive vision he has established, one as much influenced by internal struggle as it is by his current environ in Brooklyn. The Seafloor-assisted “The Cat’s Gone Nuts” epitomizes the aforementioned spirit, drawing on classic soul as well as hip hop, R&B and UK garage. Cerebrally affecting, Braille’s compositions take the listener on a walk through the artist’s past and present, a collage of emotions ranging from melancholic joy to the deepest of sorrows. All in all, it’s a pleasure to bring Braille into the Friends of Friends family, a fit that looks just as good on paper as it is in reality!

Welcome to the 102nd chapter of the Deep Electronics Podcast. This weeks set is created by the Dutch DJ Meneer Willems. A 100% vinyl mix with some of the best Deep techno. Expect a journey into the realms of deep techno. Travel to deep basses and darky textures. Enjoy!

Bio:

 Meneer Willems is a 23 year old vinyl record collector and DJ from Eindhoven, the Netherlands. He is inspired by labels such as Northern Electronics, Hypnus and Silent Season and is interested in the deeper and hypnotic sides of techno.  Additionally, he was a frequent visitor of the famous Imprint nights in the legendary club Trouw.

Starting off with a couple ambient tracks, the mix gradually increases the tempo and tries to draw you along into the depths. The mix is recorded with two turntables and a Denon mixer.
