Q. How long have you been a part of the NY music scene?
A. About 7 years now... time flies...

Q. Tell us a little bit about this mix.
A. I wanted to make something different this time around and put together a mix that covers different shades of house and is still high energy :) There's 22 tracks in it for the year 2022 lol. I've been trying to focus more on channelling and being immersed in joy this year and I think this mix captures that vibe.

Juanita's Mix 061: Akua

Toronto's Cindy Li, AKA Ciel, has a knack for balancing warmth and pressure. Her productions and mixes often feel coated in an iridescent gloss, evoking the trippy stylings of '90s UK tech house and the swung drums of classic New York house. In between that, though, there's lots of vigor via sleek electro, rippling trance, barrelling techno and big, bad breakbeats. Her style may lean towards the atmospheric but it's loaded with moxie, giving her the versatility to close out a main room or kick off the afters.

Her fluid movements between bouncy basslines, spiraling synth patterns and weightless house grooves are just one facet of her impressive rise as a DJ and producer. When she's not behind the decks, presenting radio shows or working on the excellent Parallel Minds label she runs alongside other Toronto acts Yohei S and Daniel 58, Li throws herself into community work. Committed to diverse dance floors, affordable housing and overall equality in the music industry, she's a hard worker in the realest sense of the phrase.

Li's RA mix is a treat. Rolling through scintillating drum work, wonky rhythms and dreamy pads, it feels like quintessential Ciel. In her interview below, she described how she enjoys "the challenge of trying to combine and make cohesive all the diverse styles of music I loved in a DJ set." Judging by this mix alone, it's safe to say that Li succeeded.

Producer extraordinaire, Opolopo and talented chanteuse, Shea Soul team up for a serious slice of soulful deep house.

Influenced from early age by Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones, Jean-Michel Jarre, Isao Tomita, and Kraftwerk, Opolopo now plays as a one-man band from London to Tokyo (equipped with keyboards and vocoder). His music spans over a decade on labels JVC Japan, Warner Brothers, Sony/BMG, Tru Thoughts, Om Records, Local Talk, and Especial Records. Collaboration/remix highlights include the legendary Dazz Band, Craig David, Mr. V, Lanu, Simon Grey, Ok_Ma, Mpho Skeef, Eska, and Sacha Williamson. On the underground tip, his bootleg remixes of Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, and Erykah Badu have music connoisseurs worldwide in a frenzy.

Shea Soul’s musical career has taken a distinctly independent route since leaving the renowned BRIT school. Since then Shea has worked with the likes of Toddla T, Basement Jaxx, Bugs in the Attic, Zed Bias, Calvin Harris, Example, and Shy FX to name a few. Writing and featuring on hit club tracks such as ‘Make it Funky For Me’ with Attacca Pesante, and ‘Perfectly’ with the Layabouts, music has paved the way for Shea. She’s performed to thousands of people worldwide, singing at festivals and stages covering Japan, South Africa, and Europe including London Wembley arena, and Hamburg’s famous Mojo Club, and her writing and vocals have featured on released singles globally. Toy Tonics welcome one of the US’ absolute legends in the game on their roster - Kai Alcé!  One of the original masters of jazzy house, Kai is a prime example of someone who witnessed the genesis of Detroit’s electronic musical landscape and strives to keep that spirit alive. Being of Haitian descent laid the foundation for his musical ear, starting with his childhood in Queens, New York. Some of his earliest musical influences included his mother’s penchant for soca music and the distinct Caribbean rhythms of his culture. An appreciation of Jazz would be further guided by his father’s expanding audiophile home system. During the 1970s the kindling of Hip Hop and the heyday of Disco perked the ear of a young Kai while they were living in NYC. The Big Apple would remain a constant throughout his musical journey as the years went on, but it was the move to Michigan that ultimately shaped his artistic vision.

On this 5 track EP Kai once again makes it all feel so easy! Deeply musical, yet also instantly effective on the dance floor, tracks like ‘New Life Livin’ and ‘Slide It In’ come with an ease that shows why he’s shaped the game for decades.

Mandy Alexander aka Hypoestes is a writer and DJ currently residing in Johannesburg, South Africa. Hypoestes aims to look at music as a function for healing through movement. Her use of house and techno music unpacks the roots of these genres attributed by black musicians during the 1980’s. As a writer and DJ, Hypoestes engages in critical conversations surrounding marginalisation and inequalities within the electronic dance music scene as well as the lived realities of people of colour in South Africa. These conversations extend to the dancefloor by use of dominant percussive elements which are found in many nguni and bantu cultures. As a writer of South African electronic dance music and the experiences of those who engage with the genre, Hypostes has published work on Dweller, Beatportal and Resident Advisor. 
Since her debut in 2020, Hypoestes has appeared both locally and internationally, including performances in Berlin at Whole Festival and Tresor in 2023 as well as completing a three-month residency “Liner Notes” on the Bristol based 1020 Radio. Appearances on home soil include curated DJ sets at One Park, ZEITZ MOCAA - Museum of Contempary Art of Africa,  Search Festival, Smalltown Beat and Truth.
