Two Minute Minuet (in A Flat Major)

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, pianophiles, and adventure seekers alike, prepare to embark on an auditory journey like no other. Today, the great pianist Archie Chen will perform Leopold Godowsky's mesmerizing Study no. 4 in A minor "Ignis Fatuus" – a composition so delightfully treacherous it will leave you questioning the very limits of human dexterity.

From the mind of Godowsky, the mad scientist of piano, comes a set of 53 arrangements that would make even Chopin's most nimble fingers tremble in fear. Schonberg once quipped that they are "the most impossibly difficult things ever written for the piano," and we dare say he wasn't far off the mark!

But what's all this about Ignis Fatuus, you ask? A term that conjures images of spectral lights and ghostly marshes, it refers to the deceptive luminous phenomena that have haunted folklore for centuries. These mischievous lights, known as Will o' the Wisps or Jack o' Lanterns, have been said to lead travelers astray, luring them to their untimely doom. Whether the spirits of the drowned or the souls of unbaptized infants, these eerie orbs have captured the imagination and terror of many a night wanderer.

And so, the stage is set for Archie Chen's spellbinding rendition of "Ignis Fatuus." Listen in awe as he transfers Chopin's already devilish right-hand etude into the left hand – a feat of pianistic prestidigitation that would leave even Houdini gasping for breath. As the haunting melody flits and flickers like the enigmatic lights it emulates, you may find yourself lost in its bewitching allure.

But fear not, dear listener! For Archie Chen is your guide through this labyrinth of notes, and he shall lead you safely back from the brink of pianistic pandemonium. So sit back, relax, and let the otherworldly beauty of Godowsky's Study no. 4 in A minor "Ignis Fatuus" wash over you like a mysterious, flickering flame.

This reflective, tuneful album is a collection of beautiful piano music written and performed by Ola Gjeilo. His music is a blend of jazz, classical and popular music influences, married in a unique and passionate style. The evocative melodies and harmonies of Stone Rose are sure to captivate listeners from the first hearing.

Many of the tracks are expressions of Ola's deep love for New York City, where he lives and maintains his highly successful career as a composer and pianist. Also featured on the album are elite American and Norwegian musicians Johannes Martens (cello), Tom Barber (flugelhorn) and David Coucheron (violin).

Stone Rose is Ola's first solo album, eagerly awaited across the world by audiences who have fallen in love with his expressive compositions and serenely beautiful playing.

It was originally written to be performed at the Piano Cloud Live event but I was unable to transcribe it in time for someone else to be have time to practice and so I've recorded both parts myself!!!

Ian Haywood has been an established musical entertainer since the mid 1980’s. He is an accomplished pianist who has worked in piano bars and hotels, at weddings and on cruise ships.  He has worked as half of a duo and with bands, including soul and jazz outfits.
 
Ian is largely self-taught in classical piano, following on from his early grounding with the Trinity College of Music in the early 1970’s.  Ian then turned his talents to playing by ear and later developed the art of music writing and composing.  In 1992, he obtained a publishing deal with Bourne Music in London on the strength of song material that he had written.
 
In the last few years, Ian’s love of classical music has influenced him in the development of his own brand of atmospheric music composition in the form of a piano concerto, music for piano and violin, piano and clarinet, piano and cello and many short piano pieces.  He has recently completed a 4-part jazz piece for a saxophone ensemble and is currently working on his first symphony.
 
Ian is based in Chelmsford, Essex.
