Could have taken less and run but he was a greedy fool. 
Could be free in the jungle, now he’s locked up in a zoo. 
Better stop being greedy, the next one will be you.
 
Yes monkey’s got him a handful, it’s much more than he needs. 
He isn’t all that hungry, he’s only feeding greed. 
Could be swinging through the trees but now he’s in a cage.
He takes anything he gets because he couldn’t change. 

The more you get the more you want, the less it gratifies. 
Just when you think you’ve got it all, it still don’t satisfy. 
If you had your wealth in silver, you’d still trade it in for gold. 
If you thought you could do better, you’d even sell your soul.

You’d lie and steal for power, you’d use it to gain wealth. 
You’d step on friends and lovers and send em straight to hell. 
What comes around goes around, no matter who you are. 
You’re no different than that monkey, got your hand stuck in the jar.

Times gonna come some day, when your greed gets the best of you.
You’ll make that one big mistake, like you never thought you’d do.
You’ll take more than what you need and you won’t getaway.
You’ll end up in the monkey's cage when you could’ve walked away.

I've been a semi-pro keyboard player and singer since the mid 70's but only started writing songs whilst at a loose end in February 2011 - don't ask why!

In no way am I a lyricist so I rely on collaborations with others, nameley my fellow Soundcloud members Paul Beaumont (found on here as The Time Zones), Carroll Kiphen (found on here as Carroll Kiphen!) and Lucy Prasad (yea, you guessed it, on here as Lucy Prasad!!), along with Rod Barry.
