With a video "Lockdown Diary," the Leipzig ensemble Tempus Konnex supports and encourages composers and musicians to think creatively during these challenging times. In partnership with the Forum of Contemporary Music Leipzig (FZML), Tempus Konnex founded the Ensemblefestival for contemporary music, which celebrated its first season in November 2020. The ongoing pandemic has prompted the artistic sector, including our festival, to scrutinize and reconceive conventional concert formats. Through these video diary entries, we are offering fresh compositions a platform, and continuing our momentum towards the second half of the Leipzig Ensemblefestival in April 2021.

Henrik has been an integral part of the Ambientologist family from the beginning, and it’s with great pride that his work be showcased as an early member of the label family, and more still in offering a rare full length album.

Själ ties everything the Stockholm based cellist has been doing into a consolidated, coherent and above all magnificent work, filled with rich emotion and, in keeping with its namesake, beguiling soul. As one of the most expressive instruments at a composer’s disposal, Henrik allows the cello to do the talking. Slow and deeply stirring arcs, married with sweeter taps of piano, cello plucks and subtle electronics.

The evocative capacity of television or film scores pervades the album, each track painting up vivid imagery of both the real and the transcendent. Sväva takes the listener on a journey above a rolling desert, while Ren Och Fin paints a pensive picture of medieval Europe that would give Ramin Djawardi a run for his money. Master of atmosphere, anthéne, provides the epilogue with his expansive deconstruction of Kraft.

Above all, Själ is as elegant as it is grounded in immersive feeling and deep, resonant imagery. And in his own words:

The soul communicating with the nervous system.
It gives you thoughts and images in your inner mind.
It can be memories or diffuse pictures. It takes you away from reality.
A musical-tonal floating away of the mind.

Transcendental meditation or cumulative life adversities may both lead
to ego death. For example, at the vantage point of crisis when no 
reprieve seems in sight sometimes we feel lost inside an inner universe 
and our senses intermingle, giving us a chance to reach out to an unexpected
reality. Just like the (fake?) lost cosmonaut whose voice can be heard
at the end of this track (sampled from youtu.be/E2EtIKnxB2o), we
then feel that our identity and individuality are about to explode, and
we merge into cosmic energy, be it a temporary or permanent experience. 
The sound of the inner voice informs the body, mind, soul, spirit, both 
the objective and subjective points of perception and we remember that 
inside ourselves there is a microcosm of resource as vast as the cosmos. 
That is to … see (a) sound. A nugget of pure wisdom & guidance.
