@FruitMerchant is a brand new imprint coming to fruition (no pun intended) out of Manchester from Tom Harris aka @HiddenSpheres. The name is shared with Tom's radio show on NTS, which aires monthly. Hidden Spheres is known for his percussion-filled, breezy and often jazzy sounds with releases on labels such as Distant Hawaii, Lobster Theremin and Rhythm Section. With the first Fruit Merchant release pegged for February, who better to inaugurate the label than the founder himself?

Entitled "Wonders of the Rainforest" the EP as a whole is truly a testament to the title. Derived from a documentary of the same name, the record is full of lush, tropical samples taken from the 1970's film. From the shimmering pads, hypnotic flute melodies and tougher drums of the A1, Forest Soil, to the gentle piano flourishes and sanguine horn stabs of the B2, Lianas, by and large all of the songs transport you to a much warmer destination. For those of us currently suffering from negative temperatures and a boatload of snow, this will be a welcome respite from the frigid outside air.

Our premiere today and the B1 on the record, Sapodilla, is named after a tree and fruit (another nod to the label's name) native to Central America, exactly where we want to be right now. The most dancefloor friendly of the bunch, this tune is full of afro-latin percussion and tribal-sounding rhythms bound to make you boogie. The main melodic riff has an almost Eastern quality about it, giving it a real sense of exoticness not heard in the other songs. In the latter part of the track, the melody makes way as the previously understated bassline changes to a rolling groove and takes over the main point of emphasis with steel drums, heavy percussion and some tension from a high string line in support. All in all this one is bound to make some noise.

After a short break Theomatic is back with its second release in 2019. ‘Pulse Code EP’ by https://soundcloud.com/amberflame – Andrei Zakharov’s (aka An-2) side project aimed at finding the right balance between organic yet experimental sound – is a selection of top-notch electronica with the flair of old-school disco and everything in between. The crafty and meticulous use of a variety of custom analogue hardware give way to keeping an open mind with production and sound design, which varies greatly, but at the same time, shares a coherent quality throughout the EP.

The opening track "Hope" sets the mood with its melancholic airy strings and pulsating arpeggios developing effortlessly until the groovy guitar bass kicks in lighting things up and giving the mix a completely new perspective.

Legendary Adriatic DJ and producer Verdo doesn't release often, but when he does you need to listen. He always has one foot on the dancefloor, while the other makes a leap into outer space.

Resident at the infamous Gratis Club in Senigallia, a skilled musician who brings virtuoso playing and someone with his own immediately identifiable sound, Verdo is a real hidden treasure. The Italian has
previously released on Danny Was A Drag King and also this label back in 2017, and mixes up anything from afro to acid, disco to downtempo in his grooves.

'Symmetry' kicks off in strident fashion, with throwback piano chords lighting up the airwaves as stomping drums make you move. It's the sound of an all out celebration of the sort we have all been missing recently. 
'Babbions' strikes a more tender note, with warm chords rising up through the cosmic arps and long legged drums. It's a twinkling track that glows bright and lifts your spirits no end.
'Procida' layers up more retro-future chords with bubbling melodies and star-gazing pads that will soundtrack sunsets by the sea in perfect fashion. 
"Second Trip' is a thoughtful track that sinks you into warm grooves, with shimmering keys that bring the romance. This one also comes as a bonus beatless version for lush ambient escapism and sentimental moments.

Ice Island is the long awaited project of Steven Hawley, previously the brainchild/frontman of indie dance ensemble, Codebreaker. After working with artists from The Juan Maclean, Miami Horror to Kathy Diamond & The Outrunners, Codebreaker ultimately disbanded in 2013. Going off the grid to focus on business endeavors & personal growth, Hawley quietly worked on new material honing a fresh inspiration & sound.

Ice Island debuted in 2019 on a collaboration with synthwave sensation, Tonebox for the track, Enemies. Tonebox's invigorating brand of futurism combined with Hawley's commanding vocals & writing instincts made a fairly substantial splash.

'The General' was Ice Island's first official single. It's a big, warm, catchy tune with toughness and vulnerability. A new sound that still manages to hit with familiar, cinematic-like adventure. Also included is the 'Ice Island Extended Mix', a tasteful slice for extended disco enjoyment.
Not to be outdone is a fantastic remix by Woolfy (DFA/Permanent Vacation), a hypnotizing exercise in YAZ channeling electro-funk that resolves in hypnotic trance dance twists and turns.

Look for a new stream of Ice Island material to follow & live shows when conditions permit.
