This track describes how I felt when I looked out of the window of the room where I compose most of my music, as I started creating this track.
What we see through the window depends on our point of view, and this perception is subject to many influences.

Walking around the house, taking photographs out of my windows, I took some “double shots”: photos with the exact same items in frame, but with either the foreground or the background out of focus.
I liked those and it gave me the idea of a piece of music where, half way through, the focus of the recording switches: from big and spacious sounds being “in focus” to small and close sounds.

As source material for the piece, I repurposed some material I got from experimenting with an arpeggiator that outputs the midi notes to several distinct channels. With some light editing, I created a little four voice piece. For instrumentation I used different synths and a sample library of extended technique piano, to create two big, far away layers and two small close-up layers. Half way through the piece, the focus changes. I’ve used filters (lowpass/bandpass) and reverb to dampen/blur/muffle the sound for items that were meant to be out of focus, while using filtering (bandpass/highpass) and saturation to make the layers that were in focus stand out more.

Not really sure the idea of the focus shift — from far to close — really worked in practice, but I do like the idea of it, as a composition/arrangement tool… I think I might try experimenting a bit more.

Looking at - Looking through (disquiet0700)

Trapped in a metal tube away from the studio at the start, I was able to capture the sounds of RIC -> JFK, of Nonsensical posing on CSPAN, and the Emagical EVOCative sounds of past times  - then voila! at home for some acoustic fun with children and birds. Was it all a dream? No! Here's to 700 more.

The outside view brings both peace of mind and a hint of natural chaos, the frame brings a sense of all the light & dark that humanity might bring to the picture. Plus there is DalÍ to soothe the savage beast. The piano improvisation set the tone for both open space and discord.
