At the crossroads of ritual, industrial and electronic musics, there is a niche where many experimenters are clearing the edges of genres. The three members of Nze Nze (UVB76 and Sacred Lodge) are among these: summoning sequenced machines, digital samplers and multi-effects. They’re making the instrumentals telescope guttural vocals, war stories from Fang mythologies (vernacular language of Central Africa) and arrange everything to create hybrid, unclassifiable and disconcerting pieces.
The fundamentals of radical electronic musics are there, but the production, close to the great free-jazz records, lets claim a heritage far from obvious current proposals.

Where the waters seethe, traced the echoes running along the ridge. Grown into mounds - speck of dust, above and beneath, bent in their tensile way.

'Perspective' resembles graying daze for the tense lows, that holds subdued gentleness. Belfast based musician - Verge has brought his exalted grandeur to aural fluency in the vein of gauzy, filmy rumbles.

After nearly a decade of building his sonic practice between numerous releases on labels such as L.I.E.S., Viewlexx, Alter, and iDEAL, and curating his own eclectic imprint Psychic Liberation, Nick Klein delivers a long-form masterwork via 𝑺𝒍𝒊𝒑𝒑𝒊𝒏 𝑶𝒖𝒕. Some previously-released tracks hinted at Klein's interest in the durational aspects of performance and listening, but after nearly three years of recording, 𝑺𝒍𝒊𝒑𝒑𝒊𝒏 𝑶𝒖𝒕 fully conceptualizes those proclivities.

Traversing diverse timbres and structures over 90 minutes across four tracks, Klein draws upon his cross-disciplinary experience in the totemic physicality of sculpture and installation. Beginning with intense waves of modulating oscillators, creating a vista of ghostly interferences and superpositions, Klein seamlessly transitions to a looping vocal, ascending the listener to higher planes - pure mana for the ears. Side B opens with a more muted excursion, excavating somber glassy canyons before ending with concrete-esque tape manipulations, and finally, several minutes of silence.

Klein also delves deeply into the personal, dedicating the album to "all the friends lost caught up slippin out." A direct line is drawn between the despair of late-stage capitalism and the allure of "slippin out", especially for those most susceptible. As loss impacts his patchwork of networks and community, @nick-klein reflects on who is left to share with. 𝑺𝒍𝒊𝒑𝒑𝒊𝒏 𝑶𝒖𝒕 is the documentation of that study.

[PREMIERE] Heimat - Unterwegs - UVB76 Remix [Teenage Menopause records]

Editions Mego presents The Psychologist, the sophomore album by the Istanbul born and raised, Berlin based electronic music composer and sound artist Hüma Utku.

As the title suggests, The Psychologist, is a series of sonic essays based around themes of psychological phenomena and can be read as a musical enquiry into the human condition. With Utku’s background as a graduate of Psychology and her current practice as a conceptual music composer we see the two main threads in her professional career intertwine on this unique and ambitious release.

Including recordings of Buchla 200 from Utku’s Elektronmusikstudion residency in October 2020,The Psychologist is a genre aversive work that embodies elements of synthesiser music, electroacoustic, experimental techno, industrial, modern composition and spoken word. Piano, string compositions and vocals hold weight throughout a number of pieces providing a dramatic acoustic edge to the psychological explorations contained within.

The foreboding mood of much of this release is the product of investigation that lends the unsettling theme of anticipatory grief to the mood of the tracks Light of All Lights and Continuing Bonds. Islands of Consciousness refers to Jungian metaphor for consciousness whilst the unnerving Rüya twists around dream analysis in Gestalt psychology. Fuel For The Flames proceeds as a buzzing and swirling representation of alchemy and psychological symbolism. Dissolution of I is haunted by a strange sensation of dissociation whilst defense mechanisms support the sublime Sublimation. The bright shapes of Chironian Wound represent archetypes and analytical psychology whilst the fried soundscapes and rhythms of Ataxia encapture neurological states.

The results unravel with both the clockwork rhythms of the human body and the unpredictable nature of the psyche, the pieces follow arrhythmic patterns in a harmonious way. It tells the raw and intimate story of the human experience with a new work whereby the predictable operates in parallel with the unexpected and like human experience itself, is dark and complex.

Brazilian composer, musician and sound artist CARLA BOREGAS debut LP for iDEAL is called "Pena ao Mar". Maybe a deeply personal meditation on the artist's love for the ocean. Carefully composed electronic music that is warm, sometimes rough but always capturing. First solo one since a limited 2016 cassette. Its pressed onto deep blue semi transparent vinyl at Grama in Porto in 300 copies. Cover is designed by our dear friend Philip Marshall and it is no doubt a strong, massive debut.

Ecstatic is thrilled to announce Foreign Body, the latest release from Barcelona-based Dania Shihab, who crafts dreamlike transmissions into the evocative concept of the 'foreign body' in the context of forced migration and cultural loss. 

A tapestry of sounds and emotions, this work is a product of Dania's exploration of her experiences as an Iraqi-born individual who grew up in Tasmania, Australia, an island where her native culture was completely absent. The profound sense of longing for a homeland that has never truly been experienced reverberates throughout, with each track poignantly capturing the complexities of feeling like a stranger in one's own body and society. 

Inspired by her work as an emergency doctor, the artist delves into the idea of removing foreign bodies, and sees forced migrants as 'foreign bodies' within their adopted societies. This release serves as a window into the emotional displacement of forced migrants and the struggle for cultural identity. 

Foreign Body was written and recorded at home in Barcelona, using a 4-track tape recorder, vocal looping techniques, modular synthesis, and collaged samples of Iraqi musicians and poets from the post-Gulf War era into an amorphous cloud of magnetic drones and soft hypnogogic vocal textures to entrance the listener. 

An emotive and evocative release, Foreign Body weaves together sounds and stories to explore a universal human experience. It is a testament to the sublime power of music to communicate emotion.

8B4 (1985/2022) is played by Manuel Zurria and is for four bass flutes. It is a revision of 8x4, which was written in 1985 for the DownTown Ensemble and was only performed once, due to its unusual instrumentation: alto flute, English horn (originally bass oboe), clarinet, and voice.

After 5 years of 'Fortnightly Freebies' columns collating our favourite free downloads, we decided to do things a bit differently for the 100th chapter. Introducing 'Big Material', a 19-track 'name your price' compilation that will donate 100% of profits made to Stonewall Housing, a London-based charity supporting some of the most marginalised and vulnerable in our society.

At a time when unfair austerity is increasing inequality and leaving so many behind, we hope to support a community that has given so much to the 'scene' and music we love. Digi-dub abstractions and drifting ambient to kaleidoscopic breaks and newly-coined genre, 'subtle donk', it's a pretty accurate microcosm of the If-Only curation as a whole.
