There must be something in the water. Or the air. Have you noticed an uptick of interest in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle lately?  

We spoke with Mark Jones of the podcast Doings of Doyle last season. Since then, a new society has met, another has been formed, and an academic journal has begun its path.  

To help us understand the impetus behind this movement, we invited three well-informed and energetic individuals who are responsible for some of it: Ross Davies, BSI ("The Temple"), Cliff Goldfarb ("Fordham the Horsham Lawyer"), and Ashley Polasek, BSI ("Singlestick"). 

Each of them plays a unique but essential role in the development of these public-facing entities, and they each help us understand how it all fits together.

Arthur Conan Doyle, Sportsman

We do another interview show, this time when we have a conversation with longtime Baker Street Irregular Peter Blau ("Black Peter"). A visit to a venerable scion society, the Sons of the Copper Beeches, in October 2007. Headmastiff Gideon Hill describes the group's history, assisted by Scott Bond, who then offers remarks about his 25 years as the Baker Street Journal's cartoonist. We close with an Editor's Gas Lamp from July, 1959 featuring Edgar Smith's thoughts "On the Forms of Address."

Episode 18: Sons of the Copper Beeches

One of the great benefits of being a member of the Baker Street Irregulars is that we get to meet a lot of interesting and famous people. Chief among them are the literati, such as Michael Dirda, the Pulitzer Prize-winning book critic for the Washington Post, who makes his living by writing about the literati.

In this case, Michael himself is the author, having been tapped by the Princeton University Press to contribute to their "Writers on Writers" series with the volume On Conan Doyle: Or, the Whole Art of Storytelling. In it, he takes us through Conan Doyle's life and writings - many of which may not be familiar to the Sherlock Holmes fan - and gives us a perspective on many of them through the Canon.

Burt and Scott had a chance to sit down with Michael at the Players in New York City during the 2012 Baker Street Irregulars Weekend - marking the first time our podcast has been recorded with the two hosts together in the same room.

Rather than give you an Editor's Gas-Lamp in this episode, we asked Michael to read something from his own work.

The Baker Street Irregulars are widely known as a literary society dedicated to the study of Sherlock Holmes. Since 1934 the group has been gathering in New York City for its annual dinner and weekend festivities and has embarked on a significant publishing effort centered around its own history, international Sherlockian societies' scholarship, and analysis of extant manuscripts of the Canon.

Episode 74: BSI Weekend 2015

Tom Conway as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as his confidant and partner in crime investigation... Dr. Watson.  This series ran in 1946 for only 39 episodes as American audiences had tired of nearly 20 years of Sherlock Holmes stories, films, and over 200 episodes on radio starring Basil Rathbone as Holmes.  He basically tired of being typecast as Holmes and left the series.  Tom Conway sounded very much like Rathbone and hence got the job.  "Black Angus" from Oct. 19. 1946.

On Feb. 6, 2010 a group of local volunteer actors including: Jason Daniel Roberts, James C. Darling, Diane Ficarra, Jean Proulx, and Bruce Allen came together to re-create the Sherlock Holmes radio show entitled, "The Adventure of the Tolling Bell"  The program was directed and edited by John Lovering and was recorded in a home studio to be later broadcast on his Audio Theatre program that aired on Portsmouth Community Radio for 13 years from 2004-16.

Adding another episode of The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes to Heirloom Radio.  Tom Conway replaced Basil Rathbone as Holmes, but Nigel Bruce remained in this new series as Dr. Watson.  Interestingly enough, Tom Conway sounded very much like Rathbone.  Rathbone quit the series as he had done so many movies and radio shows as Sherlock, he simply tired of doing the character.  The stories are still interesting today... so see if you can solve the crime before Holmes and Watson do! Such is the motivating factor behind&nbsp;Doyle's Rotary Coffin, a concept of Paul Thomas Miller. Paul joined us to discuss his quest to acknowledge that anyone's Holmes has something to offer. And to preview his upcoming project: a chronology of the Sherlock Holmes stories titled&nbsp;Watson Does Not Lie&nbsp;(available soon from Wildside Press). Paul set out to create a chronology that didn't rely on excuses like Watson's poor handwriting, a slip of the memory, or outright fabrications. And he's created quite a convincing argument. Tying One On with Sherlock Holmes

"pursuing some laborious researches" [3STU] The name William S. Baring-Gould is one of a hallowed few in the pantheon of Sherlockian scholars. He is one of the handful of chronologists who has attempted to put the stories in a particular order, using a number of research techniques. He also wrote the first unofficial "biography" of Sherlock Holmes with his&nbsp;Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street: A Life of the World's First Consulting Detective. And his name is synonymous with his magnum opus from 1967,&nbsp;The Annotated Sherlock Holmes. The 2019&nbsp;Baker Street Journal Christmas Annual&nbsp;looks at all of these things and more, making this legend come to life as a fully-formed and high achieving individual. Julie McKuras, Tim Johnson, Richard Sveum, and Gary Thaden joined forces to bring us this well-deserved biography of this hero of so many Sherlockians. We spoke to Julie and Tim to hear what went into writing this book and special discoveries they made about Baring-Gould along the way. William S. Baring-Gould

“your wide experience of turf matters” [SILV]&nbsp; The sport of kings horse racing is part of the Sherlock Holmes lore. It's also part of a tradition in Sherlockian events going back some 70 years. The BSI Press has issued a new book,&nbsp;, that is a comprehensive look at horse racing in the Canon, Victorian England, and the Baker Street Irregulars, as well as associated topics such as gambling, drugs (quite an associated set of vices!), the law, art, and history. Candace J. Lewis, BSI ("A Little Art Jargon") and Ira Brad Matetsky ("The Final Problem"), together with Roger Donway, edited this volume related to horses and horse racing. Candy and Ira join us to talk about the inspiration behind the volume and our own Burt Wolder describes his contribution to the scholarship. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a complex man. We know him mostly for his Sherlock Holmes stories, but he was so much more. His interest in spiritualism began far before his son's death, for example. And his storytelling abilities span historical and legal topics, as well as drama and poetry in addition to fiction. 

The podcast by Paul Chapman and Mark Jones explores the multifaceted personality and outputs of this giant of an author. Mark Jones joined us to talk about the origins of the show, what he and Paul discuss, and surprises he found along the way. And of course, the multiple links to Sherlock Holmes throughout.
