Created using Voltage Modular and a lot of crickets from freesound. 

The synth elements are quite minimal and all driven semi-randomly, there's a fair amount of subtle random modulation built into each element so the final track, while a live take was mostly a mix with only a few other controls.

Small sections from the following samples; all from freesound and all CC0, 
 were assembled into a single file which was then randomly sampled using a granular synthesis module.

How Monotonous, Herr Pencil (disquiet0715)

This week's Naviar Haiku is by Ryōkan Taigu:
Perfect calm / on a grass pillow / far from my hut

I wanted to create a piece that was ever changing, yet never changing - like watching clouds pass by, the experience feels much the same throughout, despite the changes. This is a reworking of a modular patch I had made for this week's Disquiet Junto - made much much slower but on the same principles. To the slowly moving bed I added a 13 note repeating sequence, which occasionally samples itself to add extra notes in. Because it is sampled at intervals that are unrelated to 13, and the quantiser is having different chords selected (by the slower sequences), this makes the sequence constantly and very subtly evolve.  It is a very long piece at nearly half an hour, but I felt it needed that space for the 'enjoyable boredom' to set in, for it to truly feel meditative, like lying in the grass watching the drifting clouds and not thinking about your 'hut'. 

100% modular synth, one take with no overdubs. My only interventions were to fade in and fade out at the beginning and end.

The haiku of the week was written by Sôen Nakagawa, a key figure in the transmission of Zen Buddhism from Japan to the Western world.
