Ode To Life

“Le Joli Cœur” is a re-issue of an album released by Webbed Hand Records in 2008

The music - commissioned for an exhibition of works by Jean Cocteau - is entirely based on the final piano cadenza of "Now nothing" by the Penguin Cafe Orchestra.

It features contributions by Simon Jeffes, Marco Lucchi, Roberto Corsini, Mario Nobile, Dario Derek Lucchi, Lucio Bosi, Giampaolo Violi, Giza (Bram de Jonge), Alejo Nobili, _ , Umiomiomiomio (Umio Miyazaki), Hidekazu Wakabayashi, Christian Vasseur, Jimmy Lolek, Rainier Lericolais, Duet for Theremin and Lap Steel (Scott Burland) and Louise Bronx.

My right-panned track was made using the following: piano by Olafur Arnalds Stratus on the Looped Rhythms setting, then fed through the following plug-ins: Puremagnetik's Small Winters; Chow Tape Model's TC-260 setting; and Valhalla Supermassive's 80's Mod Room reverb.

A note from encym (creator of the original layer, 0636, panned left): "This week's Junto project has always been one of my favourites -- so I recorded the first third of what will eventually become a trio. 

"I played it on my Tele through a simple, straightforward signal chain of Chase Bliss Mood (the main sound), fed through a Dark Star and a Polymoon to add space and variations in terms of timbre. No further editing in the DAW. I went for as sparse a track as I could, to provide as much space as possible for my potential collaborators. My hope is that you feel inspired by my "almost crumbling to pieces" vibe, and I look forward to hearing what you will be adding over the coming weeks for it to become a trio recording."

To prove how much of an inspiration these Haiku are:
The sound ideas came to me straight away on reading it, I sat at my un-patched modular, took aim, and there it was - from my head, into a bundle of wires, and recorded in the space of an hour.  I think that is a record for me :-) 

My track was made using my modular synth - I wanted to create a sort of glassy tone, but also to evoke evening. I find that the sound of a slowly played harmonica evocative of evening, so I aimed for a sort of harmonica / glass hybrid as my main 'melody'. I added another voice making some random twinkles to evoke the stars and twinkling lights.  This all needed something to contrast against, so a deep bass was added to add the weight of the evening shadows.  I then added a field recording of some birds to add a bit of air to it all.
