New York-via-Chicago trio Purelink – @milliamusic, @kind_tree and @raw_silk – record a deep and dub-soaked minimal techno mix for the Recognise series.

Purelink’s name has become increasingly prominent in recent years. The group – once memorably dubbed “the chillout room Backstreet Boys” – have spent the past half-decade exploring the deepest nooks and crannies of electronic music: fourth-world ambience, zero-gravity dub techno, groggy downtempo, baggy-eyed drum-and-bass. Is it ambient? Sure. But that's just part of the story. Call their music what you will, but it’s consistently remarkable, a slow-motion tumble of histories bound together by a shared interest in blissed-out soundscapes. In conversation with Michael McKinney, they speak about about the friendship, trust and chiller’s mentality that guided the creation of their new album, ‘Faith’, out now on @peakoil.

Recognise 086: Purelink

Curated a bunch of dub and minimal techno tracks and mixed them together live. I became interested in this subgenre more than a decade ago because of the  first part of a mix by Bart Skills 🙌🏻 The mix starts with a vintage Basic Channel track on vinyl (a remix of The Climax by Paperclip People, anyone recognized that?! 😉), followed by a Rhythm & Sound track by the same Moritz von Oswald & Mark Ernestus. The mix gently builds up to minimal techno tracks with more energy with some broken beats as well. Along the way “Transcendent Places” by Quantec, a warm funky track by Loco Dice “How do I Know?!” and "Dem Young Sconies" by Moodymann pass by to conlcude the mix with a dreamy Yagya track.

This mix contains tracks by: Basic Channel, Rhythm & Sound, Sunkiss, Zentex, Pablo Bolivar, Lusine, Quantec, Shlomi Aber, Loco Dice, Moodymann, Paul Kalkbrenner, Christian Smith and Fluxxion among others.

Mix vignette contains photography by Vivianne Sassen. Exposition of her work in Foam Amsterdam last year blew me away 👌🏼🤩

For the newest instalment, i'm really happy to welcome the incredible Brussels-based AliA (@aliamusicc). The local mainstay is a regular on Kiosk radio and runs her own label - @artisjokrecords. Alyah, better known as AliA,  has an exciting & unique approach to dj'ing. She is known for her blend of contemporary club music with jazz, classical and experimental sounds. 

I find AliA's musical outputs incredibly refreshing - the kind of artist who reminds you what a really good DJ can do - they can present genres & sounds to you that you'd otherwise maybe not typically explore, in a new and exciting way. For her Animix, Alyah has gone for an intensely chill blend of ambient & immersive music, with minimal, glitchy, dub techno, jazz, classical sounds and more.

London-based Oblig's (@djoblig) sound is closely intertwined with the rich DNA of UK club culture. His label Obligated Records and regular shows on Rinse FM are extensions of that, as are his razor-sharp DJ sets across the world.

Hot on the heels of Volume 2 of his label's latest compilation, he's put together an hour mix that smudges the lines between his go-to genres. The selections are punchy and uptempo while twisting through mysterious late-night grime, kinetic club cuts and pneumatic bass workouts, all with a constant low-end pressure that keeps lips curled and heads nodding.

For Tectonic’s 20th anniversary, label boss Pinch rounds up some heaters from the label alongside their Tectonic Sound compilation. Spinning the whole bass spectrum, Pinch goes from broiling two step to scrubbing grime, with frazzled pulse discharging great energy beside Trim’s idiosyncratic, expressive raps. Lighter moments like the whizzing, zipping, euphoric arpeggios of Peverlist’s ‘Feel Something’ are offset by guttural moody bass, travelling from the club convergence of rattles and tings and brightly resonating metals on Bohdi’s ‘Bellcurve’ to the heavy rotating bass of J.
