Back, Jack, do it Again - Yes, back with my first program of the year. But before that, I would like to give props and a HUGE thank you to Yissel @soundsbyyissel for taking over the decks last week with the first show of the year and also being the first guest of 2022. She went beyond the call of duty to give the program a proper kick start. Her set and selection is everything that the show is about and what I’ve been trying to build on for the last 7 years. This was Yissel’s second guest spot on the program as a guest and I will definitely not gonna let so much time pass under the bridge for her next appearance. Speaking of last week's guest, I had a nice convo with her about music and how she approaches it. She said something that really stuck with me. A set, or mix, is really telling a story. Most of the time it’s our personal story and we have the ability to control the narrative which is very empowering and healing.

Keeping that in mind it’s how I approached this week’s show. I’ve been listening to different takes/edits on tracks that had a significance during my teenage years. These songs definitely tell part of my story, such as the break ups (hey, I can’t help it I’m a libra), the song that was playing the first time I went to a club underage using fake IDs (hint: it was by Billy Ocean), a track from the Cure that used to haunt me in high school, and many more cuts that were around before my time but that I used to love. There is even a song from my favorite TV show of the time. These are mainly rock and disco songs with a modern take. Hence, the Yacht Rock/ Disco edition. This is volume 1 cause I am hoping to do more if people dig it. If you also grew up around the time I did and these songs bring back any memories let me know. Would love to hear about it. Born on the beautiful but restless island of Cyprus, an environmentally idyllic place scarred by years of war, Stephanos Pantelas alias Elninodiablo began his journey in music collecting vinyl he would play on the airwaves of pirate radio stations. Though an inspirational crossroads of culture, Cyprus also proved to be rather unwelcoming towards queer individuals, which soon prompted Stephanos to make the move to the ever effervescing city of London, whose electronic scene was booming in the mid-90s.

From small bills to top-of-the-range discos, his DJing skills soon earnt him a resident position in the booth of some of the hottest queer clubs of the time, including spots at Turnmills, Fabric and The End. Joining forces with Alan X, Elninodiablo soon tried his hand at the art of remixing with outstanding contributions for Grammy-nominated Mexican band Kinky and British soul singer Mica Paris. This knowledge in production and jockeying, Stephanos would soon put it to broader use through his own eponymous PR platform; representing the likes of Horse Meat Disco, Salsoul Records, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Mulatu Astatke, Tegan & Sara, !K7, Strut Records and many more over the years. 

After fifteen years of grind in the English capital, time had come for Elninodiablo to explore new horizons. Packing his bags, Stephanos began the writing of a new chapter in his life. His sense-awakening voyage across the world took him to destinations as diverse as India, Nepal, Thailand, Indonesia, Brazil, the US, Australia, New Zealand - where he got to live amongst intentional communities, looking to expand his vision and get more in-tune with nature. With the help of meditation, yoga and the therapeutic movement (5Rhythms, Movement Medicine) he found the second breath he desperately needed, triggering off a real creative rebirth as a result.

“When it comes to sound, I’m inspired by my natural surroundings and life experiences. I’m fascinated with how sound can be a lived-in encounter having transformative qualities for both the artist and the audience. I envision to create mini-worlds with each piece of music, transporting the listener into a journey that bridges the gap between the conscious and the unconscious.”

Settled down in Berlin since 2016, Elninodiablo is further developing his music production skills at Catalyst Music, the creative arts & technology institute sheltered at the legendary Funkhaus studios. Taking cues from his traveling experiences, his sound has bloomed into an essentially versatile auditory mosaic - deftly moving the cursor from hypnagogic dubs to hard-hitting club material, via downtempo electronica, easternmost-infused harmonics and weightlessly soulful hybrids spanning much more than traditional genres could encapsulate; evocative of broad visual expanses, from the vastness of desert scapes to the lush greenery of tropical jungles, and other dreamy interstates.

Fred Berthet is this mysterious Frenchman known as DJ STEEF who produced slow & funky downtempo house tracks in the past years. Based in Marseille this quiet but not shy producer has built his way on many different projects since the early 90’s where it all started.
After composing singles with Antoine Boullé under the pseudonym Venus Attack Project (on the label US Guidance), he created the band known as Troublemakers with his friend Lionel Corsini & Arnaud Taillefert. After an over-welcomed first LP ("Doubts & Convictions" on Guidance rec) and well received worldwide, Concecration came on the second one on Blue Note (“Express Way”) pushing The Troublemakers at one of the top electronic band in the French scene.
Fred later on focused his attention on Copyshop project, influenced by the 80’s (Gomma, Toy Tonics, La Dame Noir, Numoment...). Producing now under DJ Steef its was the occasion to synthesize his musical roots such as 80’s electro pop, poisonous disco, classy french influences, insistent downtempo and up warding house. Fred has found in his alter ego DJ Steef the perfect combinasion of incredible fat, slow, funky downtempo house tracks that every body is so crazy about.Its not about fashion but clearly about style & thats why we all love his production stamped BIOMIX, in the shadows, under cover & simply outstanding.
