As there is no diegetic sound for the short, the entire piece had to be scored and this was an essential part of making the pace and rhythm of the film work. Hayden came on board the project late in post-production so had to tailor his work around what he was given. As I have no musical expertise whatsoever, I could not communicate with him in technical terms and instead approached it as I would when directing an actor; conveying the emotional beats and considerations of the story.

Hayden responded perfectly and seemed to fully understand what I was going for even when I felt I hadn't been very clear in my instructions. He took into consideration the whole piece and created appropriate material for individual scenes, drawing on different genres, and even gave the characters signature motifs, all without losing the light-handed touch that was needed for the overall tone.

He even changed my mind on a few things after I gave him a free hand to bring his own ideas into the project. My lack of musical background meant I was relying on him to make up for my limitations and he did not disappoint, with his musical influence often bringing out elements that I had missed."
