In conjunction with IMMA’s exhibitions of the work of  Karla Black and Gerda Frömel, Sinead Hogan (Lecturer, IADT) presents What is Sculpture_? This talk considers new definitions of sculpture and explores how contemporary forms of ‘expanded sculpture’ prompt the viewer to question the object-nature of art.

What is_Sculpture?

Introduced by  Sarah Glennie (Director, IMMA),  Antony Gormley (artist) is widely acclaimed for his sculptures, installations and public artworks that investigate the relationship of the human body to space. To mark and celebrate Gormley's major contribution to the practice and discourse of contemporary sculpture since the 1970s, the artist will present a lecture that considers his current practice in the light of his seminal work at IMMA shortly after the museum opened in 1991.

In collaboration with the MA programme, ACW at NCAD and continuing with the IMMA talk series What is…? This discussion introduces the theoretical framework of phenomenology as a concept to explore the structure of consciousness, aesthetics and our experiences of the contemporary art object.

What is Phenomenology? Francis Halsall & Declan Long

Willie Doherty addresses ongoing themes of memory and place in his acclaimed lens based practice and film, Remains, 2013, a recent acquisition to the IMMA Collection and presented in the galleries. 

This fictitious film is based on real events and the locations of punishment shootings in 2012 in Derry by the dissident Republican group Republican Action Against Drugs (RAAD). Revealing how ‘place’ inscribes the social, the political, and the historical, Remains is a potent portrayal of the generational nature of conflict and its vicious circle.  

Further Information
Willie Doherty was born in Derry, Northern Ireland in 1959. He lives in County Donegal and continues to work in Derry. Since the early 1990s, he has had numerous international solo exhibitions, including the Stadtische Galerie in Lenbachhaus und Kunstbau, Munich and Hamburger Kunstverein, Hamburg; Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, Texas; The Speed Art Museum, Louisville, Kentucky; Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh; Laboratorio Arte Alameda, Mexico City; The Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; The Renaissance Society, Chicago, Illinois. In 2007 he represented Northern Ireland at the 52nd Venice Biennale. His work has been presented in prestigious international group exhibitions, including dOCUMENTA 13, Kassel, Germany, 2012; Manifesta 8, Murcia, Spain, 2010; 51st Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy, 2005; 8th Istanbul Biennial, Istanbul, Turkey, 2003; 25th Sao Paulo Biennial, Sao Paulo, Brazil, 2002; and Carnegie International, Pittsburgh, PA,1999.  He was shortlisted for the Turner Prize twice, in 1994 and 2003, and was awarded a DAAD residency, Berlin, 1999. He joined the University of Ulster in 1998, and has been Professor of Video Art since 2000

Art | Memory | Place is a year-long programme of talks and events taking place over the course of 2015-16 in the context of the ‘decade of centenaries.’ Focusing on artists whose work addresses themes relating to memory and place, the purpose of this programme is to broaden and deepen the current discussion about the subject of remembrance and commemoration and to take account of such work.

This talk took place on 21 September 2017 at IMMA.

Art Memory Place: Willie Doherty - Remains, 2017

National commemorations operate within a framework of national identity and defined statehood – frameworks that are increasingly contested and problematic within global discourses on the shifting relationship between civil society,  the state and the land.  This international symposium at IMMA took a timely look at the potential of contemporary arts practice to critically address the challenges now facing our ever-changing global society and systems of governance. Speakers featured in this recording include; Sarah Glennie, Annie Fletcher, Vivian Ziherl, Kate Strain & Barry Fitzpatrick, Mick Wilson, Jaki Irvine, Duncan Campbell, Lisa Godson, Colin Graham, Tina Kinsella, Jesse Jones, Sarah Browne and Ailbhe Murphy.

The days programme comprised of research presentations, discussions and an artists’ performance that drew on the commemorative projects of artists whose practices advances historical and interdisciplinary research, taking into account the unstable relationship between identity, territory, and borders in the so called age of shared ‘global territories’, ‘new Institutionalism’ and Ireland’s ‘decade of centenaries’.

FURTHER INFORMATION
In response to the centenary of the 1916 Rising and the evolution of society over the past 100 years, IMMA, The Hugh Lane and Create’s  2016 programmes reflected on the role artists and creativity plays in society and the identity of the nation state.   

This symposium brought leading local and international art practitioners together to interrogate how artists are helping us to conceive new formations of the state and looked at the legacies of how we have been governed. Inspired by the radical thinkers and activists who paved the way for courageous social change, the symposium considered the role of creativity in re imagining a new social and cultural order and asks what artists can bring to re imagining our future. Speakers were asked to reflected on the broader  global effects of mass mobility of both people and goods, the digitising of communication and knowledge, migration, climate change and the increasing global economy have all radically changed perceptions of territories, borders and an individual’s identity in relation to the land or a community. While colonial legacies of emigration, displacement and ongoing indigenous struggles extends an even deeper crisis of social, cultural and political agency, that prompted many discussions and comments on the day.

The Artist & The State Symposium was organised by the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin City Gallery – Hugh Lane and Create-National Development Agency for Collaborative Arts, Ireland. Convened by Annie Fletcher and Sarah Glennie, The Artist & The State Symposium took place on 26.11.2016 and was part of the official Ireland 2016 Programme.

On Memory and Forgetting

In the final event in the Art | Memory | Place programme, David Rieff, author of In Praise of Forgetting: Historical Memory and its Ironies (2016) and John Banville, award-winning author and critic discuss the role of historical memory and forgetting, taking as a starting point David's proposition that sometimes it may be better to forget? Introduced by Maurice Earls, joint editor of Dublin Review of Books.

David Rieff (born 1952, in Boston, Massachusetts) is an American nonfiction writer and policy analyst, journalist with the Guardian and was a former war correspondent. His books have focused on issues of immigration, international conflict, and humanitarianism. He has published numerous articles in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Le Monde, El Pais, The New Republic, World Affairs, Harper's, The Atlantic Monthly, Foreign Affairs, The Nation, and other publications. His latest book is titled In Praise of Forgetting: Historical Memory and its Ironies, published by Yale University Press 2016.

William John Banville (born in Wexford, Ireland, in 1945) is an award-winning author and critic. He joined The Irish Press as a sub-editor in 1969 and continued with journalism for over thirty years and was Literary Editor at The Irish Times from 1988 to 1999. Banville’s first book, Long Lankin, a collection of short stories and a novella, was published in 1970. His first novel, Nightspawn, came out in 1971, followed byBirchwood (1973), Doctor Copernicus (1976), Kepler (1981), The Newton Letter(1982), Mefisto (1986), The Book of Evidence (1989), Ghosts (1993), Athena(1995), The Untouchable (1997), Eclipse (2000), Shroud (2002), The Sea (2005),The Infinities (2009) and Ancient Light (2012). His non-fiction book, Prague Pictures: Portraits of a City, was published in 2003 as part of Bloomsbury’s ‘The Writer and the City’ series. In 2012, an anthology comprising extracts from John’s fifteen novels to date, together with selections drawn from his dramatic works and various reviews, was published under the title, Possessed of a Past: A John Banville Reader.In 2005, John won the Man Booker Prize for The Sea.

Maurice Earls holds a doctorate degree from University College Dublin awarded for research into Dublin’s newspaper and periodical press in the early nineteenth century. Maurice Earls was one of the founders of Books Upstairs Bookshop in 1978 and has worked as a bookseller since then. Maurice Earls has been Joint editor since 2006 of the Dublin Review of Books to which he regularly contributes. Dublin Review of Books . The Dublin Review of Books publishes essays chiefly in the fields of literature, history, arts, culture and the human sciences on a quarterly basis since Spring 2007. Since Autumn 2012 it publishes fortnightly with additional material added between issues and works with the ambition to promote analysis and ideas by reflecting on international and Irish themes and, where appropriate, on their interaction.
