For this episode we have a special guest mix from You’ll Never Get to Heaven to celebrate their upcoming 4th release, Wave your Moonlight Hat for the Snowfall Train on Seance Centre. The duo is based in London Ontario - Alice Hansen and Chuck Blazevic (Slow Attack Ensemble). We’re big fans, and very happy to release this album which we’ve been playing on repeat since we first heard it. For this show they have put together a mercurial moody mix moving between introspective Canadian indie pop, Argentinian AOR, unreleased Slow Attack Ensemble, and a beautiful ballad from an LA based avant-garde composer.

" About 90 seconds into "Confetti", the stunning second song on James Blackshaw’s Summoning Suns, the guitarist hesitates as he begins to negotiate a particularly tricky—and, for him, rather unprecedented—passage. The first two verses have ended, a small string section has pushed the tune onto a carousel that might have suited Van Dyke Parks in his prime, and an ascendant third verse has thrust Blackshaw into a place he’s never been: a vocal hook that he has to sing himself. "The needless noise you air," he offers gently, the instrumentalist’s voice so soft and uncertain at the start of each word that he almost drops "the." "Echoes everywhere," he ends, pushing the last syllable with such force it seems he’s using his last bit of breath. From Caterina Barbieri's debut album Vertical (Important Records/Cassauna, October 2014) composed for Buchla Synthesizer and vocals.
Vertical is a meditation on primary waveforms and the polyrhythm of harmonics in synthetic sounds, stretching the boundaries between drone, minimalism and techno. Barbieri's minimalist focus arises from the exploration of the stratigraphic potential of voltage-controlled sequencers, in terms of polyrhythm and polyphony. Employing synthesis, psychoacoustics and repetition as key concepts, the italian composer stylizes the dancing of wave cycles in severe geometries of time and space.
All the tracks were played, recorded and produced in Stockholm, at EMS (Electroacoustic Music Studios) and KMH (Royal University of Music) in Summer 2013.

A series of solo piano recordings registered in Belém, Brazil at a cultural centre in the Praça da república run by the Universidade Federal do Pará (UFPA) downtown. I had a 1 hour window to record one evening thanks to Margaret Refkalefsky. This series of recordings took place in the moment and also was mediated by the sounds of the city. I was listening intently to the city's soundscapes while playing. My friend, musician and producer Nick Schofield, generously took these recordings and worked with them to bring out some of the rich tones that were registered simply on a Zoom H4n recorder.
