“The Uncompromising Operator" is intended to be an amalgam of a number of the managers I had over the years working in corporate software development. One of the early prominent ones was a fellow who spent most of his time at work playing the stock market, and was infuriatingly successful at it. Stocks, I mean, not his actual job. A lot of my managers were exactly like the guys in the movie Office Space, particularly the character who didn’t seem to have any real purpose other than to carry orders from our product managers down to us engineers. The last voice is supposed to be mine. "I'm the guy who does his job. You must be the other guy".

This is a song I wrote about a situationship that I had been in for far too long and I kept going back but had no idea why. When I finally asked him what he wanted from me, I never heard from him again but I was so frustrated with myself that I wrote this song.

The cover is an illustration of my mom, based on a photo of her from when she took a combat medicine course. They didn’t have a uniform or helmet small enough for her, but she went anyway, because she was the original heavy metal mama.

The earliest demo I can find for Heavy Metal Mama is from 2009, although I think the original idea was sometime in 2006 or so.

Away is a cover of a song by a band named Silver Cup. At a time when I was debating whether to continue and finish this music, they encouraged me to keep going, so I included a cover as a tribute. I was very fortunate to work with Sarah Velez on this track.

This track's full title is 198 characters long (I call Floating for short), which at one point was the maximum length for a Spotify track.

Floating includes a sample of wind chimes that I recorded on the patio at mom’s home as she passed away of cancer. The track length (9:52) is also a tribute; she was born in 1952.

Originally, this was a songwriting challenge to use a particular set of synthesizers for a contest; turns out it was all techno. This wasn’t techno. So all the synths were removed and the perfectly-good song was reconstructed. It’s really not about anything but having a good time.
