Why does everyone here have some fucked up backstory?

Given he's been the villain for so long, I would want a second shot at life too. Still, I'm worried. God, I fucking hate surprises.

Don't get me wrong, the intruder seems to be pretty alright. He's not a Shattered, we can tell that immediately. Still, someone from outside is hard to trust after all I've seen. The group seems to like him though, and the others have supported bringing him on to help, and... I can't really say no to that.
