John Monkman makes a highly anticipated return to the spotlight with ‘Meta’.

Meta is an experiment, paving the way for a new kind of release format that embraces the new world of the NFT.  
There will be two versions of ‘Meta’ released; The original - Extended Mix, that is limited to 50 copies and available  to download and stream exclusively as an NFT, as well as a shorter mix of the track -  available to stream and download on all DSP’s.

Monkman says:

 “NFT’s are reshaping/turning things upside down. They offer endless possibilities of how to release music whilst creating new ways to engage with the community…things were getting a little stale, so I’m excited to see where this new technology takes us”

Released on his imprint Beesemyer Music, Meta showcases Monkman’s love of intricate, far-out modular sounds. The track is fused with an other-wordly vocal and follows on from his highly revered single ‘Ecstasis’, co-produced with Pete Tong and released on Maceo Plex’s label Ellum.

Asked how the track came about, Monkman says:

“the track started as a live jam on the Buchla Easel - after recording multiple  takes, the main challenge was trying to make sense of the chaos - there’s a lot going on  - the vocals really help in grounding the track’.

John Monkman - META (OG Edit Length)

The 31st release of the label comes out of the hands of the Greek Antimatter Particle (@antimatterparticle) and is called ‘Gloomy Winter’. The EP includes three minimalistic and dark melodic techno originals, with emphasis on techno. Besides, we are happy to announce Heîk (@heik_ofc) is contributing to this EP with an energetic and more melodic orientated remix.

The first track of the EP is also the title track, called ‘Gloomy Winter’. The icy and dark vibe, which is sensible throughout the full EP, immediately comes forward. With tight and minimalistic percussion elements Antimatter Particle is giving a rapid groove to the track. On top of this groove, lingered pads and atmospheric synths are laid down.  

‘Floating’ is the banging second track. The lower part is a bit heavier and is giving a lot of groove and body to the track. The cold synth work is a nice example of eccentric sound design. Combined with the mysterious background percussion, it results in a very compelling composition.

The third track of the EP is called ‘Tar’. In the track the compelling vibe evolves to captivation. Founded by an acidy lower part, the ethereal pads are taking you to another dimension, where they keep you until communicating synths are taking over in the breaks. Together those elements are setting a haunting mood. 

The final track is Heîk’s remix of ‘Tar’. He took the compelling parts and main melody of the original and built his own world around them. The remix has a lot of energy with an ongoing flow. On top of this flow, interesting sound designs are taking shape, providing unexpected moments. Sometimes it makes you think twice about what you are hearing. So, HeÎk closes the EP in a dynamic and powerful way.

While Mar io‘s recent Twilight of Ages EP was fully committed to the sound of the 90s heyday of athmospheric ambient with very distant reverberations of rave escapism at most, the seven new ToA remixes of his new EP take a much more direct route into the club. The word “remix” falls short here, however, as the EP is more of a spin-off that draws inspiration from various ToA tracks and creates entirely new pieces of art from them. 

While the mood on all tracks picks up the ambient atmosphere of the source material, the ubiquitous straight bass drum adds a certain urge to hit the dancefloor. This is especially evident on Cie‘s marching contribution (A Part of Future & Space) or modul808‘s very oldschool ToA interpretation, which puts itself into the tradition of classic 90s deep house. IO label owner Lindsay Wang aka Polygonia, the Rhinelander Harada, who is otherwise known from Trapez, Traum or Paso, and Dan Watts from Bristol aka Fractal Architect also take up the warm deepness of the source material, but drift into subtly trancy dancefloor realms.
