Naarm/Melbourne’s Lily Dalton caught my ear with an impressive series of mixes for @city-bleus and @chomleychomley among others, and I’m so glad to welcome her as she prepares to launch her upcoming label @irregularforms. Lily’s mix is infectious and brilliantly paced, all while highlighting a solid dose of Australian music, and it’s clear she’ll soon enough be bringing entire crowds to their knees. This one sounds like a rush to the front, a shared inhale, a collective dream of dancing beneath a florescent sky.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐬 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐧𝐣𝐨𝐲 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜?

I like to write – I sometimes do little poems and stories for my own benefit (with absolutely no intention of publishing or generally publicising and of it). If you know me and Peaky Beats' collaboration series BrainJuice then you'll know I also love horror movies – whether it's very serious allegory or goofy slime and gore. But really I guess anything can be considered art if it expresses something and you take care over it, from making dinner to writing music to making your bed. I find approaching things like that gives me happier days.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐛𝐮𝐦, 𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭, 𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜?

One of the things I like the most about dubstep etc. is the little psychedelic dubbed out sounds and abstract, acousmatic sound design and I think where that comes from is psychedelic bands like The Mars Volta and Jane's Addiction. I remember basically discovering delay through those bands as a teenager and I think my approach to sounds has grown from there. I still go back to TMV all the time. I also enjoy various forms of folk music and I often used to go to folk sessions in pubs.

I see music as yes, an art, but I do it more like a craft. I enjoy the process of getting better at all the little technical things and realising the sounds in my head. I'm not trying to construct a meaning or tell a story or anything really – I'm trying to do a craft well, like a carpenter trying to make a good table. Some might say that sounds a bit dry but I'm satisfied with the endless fascination with the sounds themselves. What more do they have to mean?

I'm definitely a producer before being a DJ, so I first played live with an Ableton live setup, MIDI controllers etc. But nowadays I find it a bit contrived to try to do dance music “live” - my production method is inherently offline so trying to shoehorn it into real time doesn't make much sense for me. There's a real danger of doing something just to be doing something, whether it serves the music or not. I think I'm happiest with a simple DJ setup (digital and vinyl ideally) and a very small but very densely packed room.

Well I started releasing music as Vel and as part of BrainJuice during lockdown and I still haven't had a chance to play out, so there's a year's worth of my own productions that I'd be really keen to hear properly on a proper system! Just generally there's a whole year of releases I'm ready to bust out. I think Get 2 Get Her by Chavinski (Myor) is going to absolutely go off though, as is the whole of WAVE001 from Seventh Wave Sounds – loads of good UK Breakbeat from the last 6 months or so actually.

Based in snowy Sapporo, located in the northern-most region of Hokkaido, Japan, OCCA is involved in various activities including as a DJ or an event organizer.  His parties all have different concepts, including: “Archiv”, a techno party at the legendary Sapporo club, Precious Hall; “Approx”, an open-air party from Hokkaido; “Phantom Center” with a more experimental approach and more recently, “Sect”, at Tokyo club Vent. As a DJ, he aims to harness the worldview of his dancers, incorporating techno from across the global field through his deft mixing.  OCCA has garnered a name for himself in Japan and has been invited to play sets at various clubs and open-air parties across the country. He has played at events including: “Future Terror” - regarded as the leading techno party in Japan - organized by DJ NOBU and HARUKA; “Exit The Labyrinth”, to which he was invited by organizers of Mindgames, following Peter Van Hoesen’s recommendation; as well as “Balance” (Mindgames); and “Dommune×Boiler Room”. From his performance at these events, OCCA has cemented himself as a respected DJ in his own right.

Our next guest After 15 years as a DJ and producer, we can safely say that DOC has traveled through most styles and genres. From hard techno free parties in Barcelona in the ‘10s to disco events in London in the ‘20s, DOC has developed a broad music taste and vinyl collection during his artistic journey.

Some years ago, he landed on a musical planet inhabited by all things deep. DOC has a genre-agnostic approach to his music selection. If it is psychedelic, ritualistic, and hypnotic, it fits. He picks from ambient, techno, breaks, house, dnb, dub, and downtempo to create a trip of his own, aiming at providing both a body and mind experience.

In his monthly podcast, Selene Series, DOC explores the different shapes that mental and psychedelic electronic music can take. Selene Series is a podcast that has been running for 3 years and is released each full moon.
