𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐬 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐧𝐣𝐨𝐲 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜?

I like to write – I sometimes do little poems and stories for my own benefit (with absolutely no intention of publishing or generally publicising and of it). If you know me and Peaky Beats' collaboration series BrainJuice then you'll know I also love horror movies – whether it's very serious allegory or goofy slime and gore. But really I guess anything can be considered art if it expresses something and you take care over it, from making dinner to writing music to making your bed. I find approaching things like that gives me happier days.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐛𝐮𝐦, 𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭, 𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜?

One of the things I like the most about dubstep etc. is the little psychedelic dubbed out sounds and abstract, acousmatic sound design and I think where that comes from is psychedelic bands like The Mars Volta and Jane's Addiction. I remember basically discovering delay through those bands as a teenager and I think my approach to sounds has grown from there. I still go back to TMV all the time. I also enjoy various forms of folk music and I often used to go to folk sessions in pubs.

𝐈𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜?

I see music as yes, an art, but I do it more like a craft. I enjoy the process of getting better at all the little technical things and realising the sounds in my head. I'm not trying to construct a meaning or tell a story or anything really – I'm trying to do a craft well, like a carpenter trying to make a good table. Some might say that sounds a bit dry but I'm satisfied with the endless fascination with the sounds themselves. What more do they have to mean?

𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐃𝐉 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐡 (𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐮𝐩), 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭.

I'm definitely a producer before being a DJ, so I first played live with an Ableton live setup, MIDI controllers etc. But nowadays I find it a bit contrived to try to do dance music “live” - my production method is inherently offline so trying to shoehorn it into real time doesn't make much sense for me. There's a real danger of doing something just to be doing something, whether it serves the music or not. I think I'm happiest with a simple DJ setup (digital and vinyl ideally) and a very small but very densely packed room.

Well I started releasing music as Vel and as part of BrainJuice during lockdown and I still haven't had a chance to play out, so there's a year's worth of my own productions that I'd be really keen to hear properly on a proper system! Just generally there's a whole year of releases I'm ready to bust out. I think Get 2 Get Her by Chavinski (Myor) is going to absolutely go off though, as is the whole of WAVE001 from Seventh Wave Sounds – loads of good UK Breakbeat from the last 6 months or so actually.

Genocide, June 2025:
Israel is only the executioner, every nation which has armed that country in the past year is an accessory to that genocide, an accomplice, a facilitator.  We cannot talk about war crimes because when you target unarmed civilians, mostly women and children, we are talking about a massacre, like terrorists do, not a war. The people who orchestrated that massacre, in the US, the most duplicitous, followed by those of the UK, Germany, France, and probably a few lesser ones should be tried for crimes against humanity just as well as Netanyahu and his cabinet, because it has been going on for two years, generously reported by media of all kinds, so the enablers knew exactly how the arms were to be used, as a tool for revenge, domination, and humiliation of the Palestinian people.  The conflict has ceased to be about the defense of anything for months.

The parties responsible have made a mockery of decency, morals, fairness, proportion, or justice, not to mention empathy.  Of what little there was, these concepts will be a lot longer to come back than they were to be struck down.

I have not been able to recover access to my other account [https://soundcloud.com/ha-kekong] for a couple of years.  I have tried a few times to get back into it but SoundCloud doesn't trust me.  Same phone number, same email addresses, and they still claim that they can't verify my identity.  I created that account about three years ago as a substitute to my regular account which SoundCloud temporarily closed.  They closed it as part of some upgrade procedure in their system, the result of a bug that affected many accounts, about two years ago.  Since SC did not inform its users I didn't know if that was permanent or not, so I created that other account which I can't access.  Don't be mad if I have not replied to your message in the past two years, that's because I never got them ; ) ... You can always reach me here though.

You can't see it because of the angle with which I took the shot, aiming down, but beyond those blocks is the sea.  To the left is the Mediterranean, to the right is the Atlantic Ocean.  No it's not Gibraltar, but a little bit further West. ... Actually I checked recently and it is further North more than West, I thought I was facing South when in fact I probably was facing the Atlantic ocean, which is why I suppose the waves were of a decent size where we were.
