Arbour & Fantompower, from Bellingham, Washington, kick off our very first Artist Residency series.  They spent 5 days in the Inner Ocean Studio in Calgary, Alberta to create a brand new 5 song EP.  They braved the cold Canadian winter, got cozy in the studio utilizing nearly every piece of gear we had to craft something very new and special between these long time friends, roommates and music collaborators.  

While they have collaborated on numerous tracks with each other, and also play together in a band called Club Mage, this Sessions EP technically marks the first official release with both Fantompower and Arbour working together on every song.  We are honoured to have witnessed these two ultra talented producers make some magic, truly a special series of moments in time.

G Mills exquisitely finesses his flexibility as a producer of depth on this six track EP produced in house at the Inner Ocean Studio in May of 2019.  The Brooklyn based maestro dazzles with his talent and intuitive playfulness whether effortlessly banging out the signature swing on his beats, melting ivory with sensual chord play or rattling you to the bone with buttery bass lines . Did we mention he can chop a sample too? Like an Iron chef G Mills chops and flips tracks into unique new compositions beyond recognition. With tracks like “Shape Shifting Bill Murray” and “Pygmy Jerboa” no title is too obscure, no sound is off limits. Talent, creativity, humour and humility define him as one of the most promising beat makers around today.

Joe Nora teams up with Yuutsu in August of 2019 at the Inner Ocean Studio for an Artist Residency. Both producers have incredibly distinct styles, Nora with his intricate drums and percussion and that ever present watery vibe, while Yuutsu is the master of slow cinematic drama with simple and emotive melodies. Combined together they produced one of the most interesting albums we’ve heard in recent years, the complimentary pairing yielded amazing results!

Joe Nora & Yuutsu - Inner Ocean Sessions - Episode 3

Dan Panarese (aka Peter Bark) from Brooklyn, NY, always holds true to his artistic vision, forever keeping to his own lane, whether it's crafting beats, house or ambient music. Late September of 2019, Panarese travelled to Calgary, AB, to produce music at the Inner Ocean Records HQ, a dark warehouse in the rail yards to the east of town. Artists are given tons of gear and equipment at their disposal to make whatever music they wanted, allowing the space and environment to help inform their creations.

Right away Panarese was pulling apart tape cassettes, using the 4 track Tascam Portastudio to layer endless ultra lush synth and guitar droning tape loops. The following days were spent experimenting with sound design and collecting a vibrant palette of loops and segments that he would later use to sculpt an ambient EP that flows in a continuous 3 part movement. His creation is truly out of this world, each listen revealing new layers of depth and detail.

Peter Bark completed the final episode in the Warehouse Collection of artist residencies. All 4 episodes are released together on a Double LP Vinyl and Tape Cassette edition to immortalize a special time in Inner Ocean history.

Inner Ocean Records is a platform and collective for emerging artists to release music and visual art. Based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the label was conceptualized in 2012 as a vehicle for artists to have their music heard and seen, to build a community of passionate people.  We designed the label to be what we would have loved to have as artists ourselves, redefining the rules in an ebb and flow to the changing landscape of music. We have made a conscious commitment to be transparent, adaptable and always for the people.

We are a label for artists, by artists. 

We’ve built the backbone of this label around great sound and feeling; laid back, honest and forever chill. We have released a lot of different sounds; Ambient, Lofi Hip Hop, RnB, Modern Funk, Future Soul and Indie.
