Mr Ks aka Jean-Pierre Baroni is one of the latest emerging talents from French electronic music, alongside a new generation of artists from France who are making a serious impact on the house and techno world. A student of classic Chicago and French house, Mr KS dishes up an exemplary 4-track EP on the ever-impressive Music Is Love label, complete with high-grade remixes from French compatriot Mr G and label boss Oli Furness.

The first of the originals on the EP is Take a trip,, a bumping bassline forms the fore of the track, flowing infectiously over siren sounds that grow in presence, cosmically off-set against the trippy male vocals. Built around an undulating bassline, Mr KS dishes up more head-nodding house goodness, carefully cultivating a strong sense of groove-heavy rhythm to his music.

Oli Furness brings  home a stomping house remix of Take a Trip. Prolonged synth sequences flail fluidly beneath the tampered vocal of the track, building before a flourish of heavy-hitting pads that pack with a powerful punch. The synth chords weave back in momentarily, while lo-fi hi-hats and sporadic keyboard flourishes flesh out the track, coalescing over the trippy vocals until the resounding keypad breaks and surging bassline carry the track on it’s course.
On the flip B1 see the 2nd of the original tracks on the ep. Groove on starts A heavy kick snare and intermittent wood block shots kick off proceedings, rattling against the moody and bumbling bassline, which simmers and carries the track organically through. Vocal hits play out, bouncing off shimmering keys pads, fluidly coalescing against the ticking percussion sequences. The end result is a stripped-back, hypnotic house opener that will go down well in any peak hours set. 

French don Point G  completes this strong 4 track ep, asserting his unique musicality on this record, reaffirming why he’s still one of the most revered and influential names on the underground circuit. Quickening the tempo with his remix of … meandering acid pads, ticking hi-hats and marching drums intersect the pace over sonic, oeuvre textures. Synths whirl in the background against the deeper, growing percussion rhythms, taking the atmospheric track to far out terrain; It’s the sort of raw, inventive house and techno that has made Point G into the household name he is.

Slamming in for exposure via Cassy’s commanding imprint Kwench Records is venerated DJ, producer and label chief Alex Arnout with a vitalising two-track EP.

Inspired by the rich house tracks dispatched by Danny Tenaglia’s Tribal America label in the mid ‘90s, the EP aims for nostalgia-grabbing gold and takes hold with ‘Afrofuturism’. Loaded with low-end grooves and mesmeric, spaced-out vocal hooks, it’s guaranteed to put dancers in the zone. ‘Riffin’ cuts in like a temptress, with an equally absorbing vocal hook and slamming drum loops for a satisfying payoff.

Rydim is a mystery. Well, partly… One thing that isn’t a mystery is the high level of acid house authenticity at play here. Dark, heads-down strobe light seduction with the focus squared firmly on the soul of the dance. 

‘FOMO’ lives up to its name thanks to some ominous reese craft. Purring savagely throughout the track, leaving space for the sinewy 303s to dance wildly, it sucks you right in and spits you back out into the lasers at speed. Miss it, miss out. 

Don’t miss either Johannes Albert’s remix or the Bass Tool either; the former maintains the acid but re-shapes the bass into a warmer vibe while the latter strips everything back to that growing, heated bassline. Both will leave everyone in the house happy… 

Finally we have ‘Fairlight’. A homage to the mother of all samplers? That’s another mystery to solve. But we do know it’s another beauty from Ridym; naked beats and bass with crucial pads woven in for optimum breath-takes, every rush any dancer has ever felt since the 80s is saluted and celebrated right here. Leftroom Limited's next release finds esteemed musicians, producers and live performers No Regular Play make their debut on the label. The American duo of Nicholas DeBruyn and Greg Paulus serve up four fantastic new cuts that get remixed by countryman and dance legend, Doc Martin.

Over the last decade, No Regular Play have become synonymous with richly musical house grooves. Often laced with Paulus’s trumpet playing, the pair’s music goes way beyond the dance floor and has landed on Wolf + Lamb, No 19 Music and Crew Love, with two LPs showcasing a knack for disco, synth pop and deep house like few others.

First up here, Room Keeps Spinning is a dark and driving house cut with classic hits and a rubbery bassline powering it along. Pained vocals bring a late night, inebriated feeling and crafty synth work fleshes out the grooves with a late night tripiness. The brilliant Bare Witness is a totally different vibe, with bumping drums and spaced out pad work making for a sci-fi atmosphere. It’s a fresh, crisp dancing track that builds the pressure and twists and turns on robotic synths that sound like the future.

Sublevel boss Doc Martin has been at the heart of house music for decades. His timeless style, rare DJ skill and legendary series of residences have made him a real great. The first remix here is a tense, steel plated house cut with loose synths bringing a wild atmosphere and Lillia’s vocals adding a sense of soul, while the second is a more direct and stripped back version that will take you on a trip.

The final original is UR FINE, which again shows off another side to No Regular Play: it’s a freaky bit of house for the after party. Chattery claps and warped synths, weird vocals and spooning hi hats all add up to a brilliantly off-kilter cut that will blow minds.

This EP truly shows off the breadth and depth of No Regular Play’s ever evolving and fascinating sound.
