Written for piano solo and live electronics (written in MaxMSP), '...As Viewed From The Shore' is written in memory of the 20th century Italian composer Luigi Nono, whose late work '...sofferte onde serene...' for piano and tape was one of the inspirations for this piece. The electronic component of the work is entirely autonomous, making it possible for a performance to be accomplished by a single unaided performer (although there may also be a technician present for live mixing, as in this recording).
The solo piano part of my own work draws directly upon Nono's piece on several occasions, utilising gestures, textures and even quoting some of the harmonic language at points. To create the illusion of the tape component functioning as an extended dimension of the piano as an instrument, Nono deliberately constructs a tapestry of sounds mined from the piano that preempt, reflect, and converse with the live performer. I also sought to strive for something similar, setting myself the challenge that none of the material could be pre-recorded, and must instead be derived from the live performance.
The repeated references to '...sofferte onde serene...' are a mark of admiration both for the composer and for the work, which I myself have fond memories of performing. This work is both a hommage to Luigi Nono and his work, which I myself have fond memories of performing, as well as a direct response to his music looking back upon it. This is inferred with the title '...as viewed from the shore' in relation to that of Nono, often translated as '...serene waves endured...'
