Continuing on from his Odyssey EP released in 2013, Ryan Lee West aka Rival Consoles creates atmosphere and space whilst exploring waves of sound and rhythm, and the power of colour. With Sonne Ryan creates music to structure itself around a pulse, rather than the pulse being the defining point. 

The title track begins with “a very subtle set of melodies that repeat almost without confidence, and then gradually give way to a huge collage of colour and power”, as Ryan describes it. Not relying on a conventional beat, it’s a prime example of how an analogue synthesiser can create the power and momentum of a rhythm section. From the distorted waves in 3 Chords, growing and shrinking, to the rhythmic waves of constant speeding up and then slowing down in Recovery, it’s the Moog Voyager, Prophet and tape delay that make up the core sound of the EP. Whilst tracks like Helios, Haunt and Think Tank see West play live drums and acoustic guitar.

“I’m often looking at art in exhibitions and I always think to myself ‘why the hell don’t I have this much colour in my work?’ The answer in part I think is down to synthesis. It is very difficult to create colour without it sounding plastic. Colour in music is both the note combinations and the actual timbre of the sounds. There are lots of instances of very colourful ambient sounds, which I took great care to create for each song, using various methods – from passing analogue synths through chains of effects to chopping up random sequences of recordings and forming tiny collages." – Ryan Lee West

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Some might be surprised that London based electronic producer Ryan Lee West, the man behind Rival Consoles, shares a home with contemporary classical composers such as Nils Frahm, Ólafur Arnalds and Peter Broderick. And yet they have a lot more in common than expected. Fascinated by sound from an early age, Ryan chose to dedicate his time to studying, experimenting with and producing sound graduating from De Montfort University in Leicester. One consistent element in his musical journey has been his desire to create a more organic, humanised sound. Ryan often drafts early ideas on piano, violin and guitar, although the end result is much more electronic-laden. As an accomplished sound designer he has repeatedly performed at the Tate, and recently created a bespoke audio-visual performance for Boiler Room at the V&A. Ryan is currently composing music for a soon to be announced BBC production.

After supporting Luke Abbott on his recent UK tour and I Break Horses on their North American tour in spring, Ryan will debut his new live set with a special release show in London, followed by a string of West Coast U.S. dates culminating in Decibel Festival in late September – more details to be announced soon.

February 2016 sees the 3rd anniversary of Houndstooth, and the label mark this with their 50th release. ‘Tessellations’ is a compilation of brand new, exclusive tracks from each of the 14 artists to release on the label.

The release serves to simultaneously trace common threads and highlight tensions within such a stylistically expansive roster.

Commencing the 10th anniversary celebrations with a free compilation entitled Erased Tapes Collection VIII, Erased Tapes also welcomes the iconic Penguin Cafe to the roster amongst tracks from new signing Daniel Brandt (of Brandt Brauer Frick) and Peter Broderick’s duo project Allred & Broderick. It also includes recent compositions by Rival Consoles, A Winged Victory For The Sullen, Ben Lukas Boysen, Douglas Dare and Immix Ensemble & Vessel, as well as a previously unreleased soundcloud.com/ryan-davis remix of Erased Tapes stalwarts Ólafur Arnalds & Nils Frahm which was recently favoured by Aphex Twin and an exclusive edit of Woodkid & Nils Frahm’s score for JR’s Ellis, with spoken words by Robert De Niro.

The Story before: 

When i heard the Album Trance Frendz of Olafur Arnalds & Nils Frahm for the first time, i directly felt a connection to the song they both started together at 00:26. The fine textures of the synths and the subtle evolution in this one-taker brought up the idea of having a version i can play in the late nights on the dance floor but which also would work perfectly for listening in your comfort zone. 

The drums and way of how the remix should flow came naturally and as i had the song standing i layered the original stems here and there to have the track playing in some kind of canon. As i was very happy with my personal version i sent it out to https://soundcloud.com/olafur-arnalds, https://soundcloud.com/erasedtapes & the rest of the participants of this project. Gladly Olafur picked up my remix and forwarded the song to the label which lead to having this unofficial version approved to share with you out there. I hope you like it and thanks to Erased Tapes and all involved for the support :)

Speaking of the LP, Sofia Insua tells us: “DELIRIA is about distance and its sneaky way of censoring the heart, preventing it from feeling. I wrote the tracks during various transitional periods in my life, so I was going through change - adapting, looking for the next steps, and finding ways for love to survive. Some of the most defining lyrics on the record popped up in my head while walking busy streets, while traveling, while in motion. I was discovering myself geographically and through the songs that ended up being DELIRIA.”

Arms and Sleepers continue their journey through a turbulent 2020 with the 5th installment in their 6-part music series being released this year. The new full-length album, titled CORPUS DEI, will be out on Dec. 4 via Future Archive Recordings.

Arms and Sleepers is the electronic music duo Max Lewis and Mirza Ramic. Formed in Boston, USA in 2006, the group has amassed over 30 releases, nearly 2,000 live performances, and countless TV and Film music placements in their 15-year history. 2020 has been the group’s busiest year yet, and the upcoming new album CORPUS DEI looks to add another signature stamp in Arms and Sleepers’ diverse music catalog.

Written and produced throughout 2020 – while on US and European tours, unplanned quarantine in Latvia, and settling into a new home in Berlin – CORPUS DEI is a surreal musical journey that feels both free-spirited and highly tense. It is the culmination of a fragile, uncertain and difficult year, and a closing statement on an ambitious, multi-release conceptual project. CORPUS DEI is Arms and Sleepers’ fourth full-length album released in 2020 alone, which also saw the release of several EPs, standalone singles, and remixes. Each release has revolved around the idea of “self-destruction”, an eerily relevant topic that was conceived well before the pandemic-stricken year. Writes Ramic: “I started planning for this 6-part music release in 2019 as a way of dealing with and processing my own increasing existential obsession with mortality, meaning, and ultimate absurdity of life. I wanted each release to capture some broader, objective elements of human life as well as some more personal, subjective experiences. Little did I know that I would end up living in isolation in Latvia for nearly 4 months earlier this year. It was an incredibly bizarre period of my life, as it was—and continues to be—for much of the world.”

CORPUS DEI combines the varied sounds of Arms and Sleepers’ recent releases, merging elements of instrumental hip-hop, IDM, electronica, downtempo, and ambient music. The intricately textured beats and densely layered synths form a sonic palette that should be familiar to fans of Arms and Sleepers, but the static-induced, noisy and unsettling atmosphere of the album as a whole adds a new dimension to the group’s catalog. Experimenting more closely with sound design and focusing on the overall compositional flow, Arms and Sleepers manages to create a record that seems to—for better or for worse—capture the dreadful emotional weight of 2020. Writes Ramic: “The various song ideas for CORPUS DEI were written throughout 2020 in what seem like impossibly different contexts: a few days off on tour in Augusta, Georgia in warm southern weather in mid-February; a tiny hotel room in Odessa, Ukraine on the first day of a European tour; a strange 4 months in Riga, Latvia while stranded there in the midst of a pandemic; and a rejuvenating new chapter of my life in Berlin, Germany despite the continued uncertainty about the pandemic. This album feels like a collection of estranged fragments of my life this year – a year that has felt like an eternity.”

CORPUS DEI releases on Dec. 4 via Future Archive Recordings and will be accompanied by various special cinematic visualizers.

"In The Face Of It" by Acetylene is a song about human connection.

Acetylene was a 4-piece from Melbourne, Australia. Wide-ranging influences included rock, pop & trip hop (Pixies, Nirvana, Screaming Trees, Portishead), French pop music (Francoise Hardy, Serge Gainsbourg) and earlier singer-singwriters (Tim Buckley, Nico). While the rhythm section borrowed elements from electronic and dance music, their sound remains firmly a rock experience, especially in the use of guitar feedback. Their instrumental tracks and interludes often have an introspective, cinematic quality. 

The Form Guide (Melbourne, Australia) said of Acetylene:

"..this band has a few ideas here that are right on the money. Echoes of the Velvet Underground, Stereolab, Big Star (without sounding like any of them). Love the Tarnation style desperate longing vocals."

"Indie guitar rock of the chugga chugga variety (ie. Bats, Stereolab). A couple of super-catchy songs."

The group was initially known as Anodyne.

This song is produced written and sung by me. It has an electro-pop vibe in the direction of "Bad guy" by Billie Eilish. The song is about the objectification of women and how we don’t dress pretty for the male gaze but rather for teenage girls, so they think: damn I want to be like her. It's about girl power.
