Handstitched* is happy to announce a new split-artist EP (hs53) is by two consistent artists and friends of Handstitched* - Darren Harper & Ümlaut, both well-known and respected within musical spheres and both have released music on an amazing array of well-respected labels over the years.

Darren Harper - "Generational Drift - A seasonal reflection in four movements" wanders through a tactile and circular movement of explorations and minimalistic patterns of generative structures, each arrangement allows itself to occupy its own space within the theme, and variations evolve with harmonious and unrestricted woven textures, subtly offering an openness and tranquillity. "Generational Drift" is a long-form piece that is a sonic tapestry of evolving beauty and internal perceptions.

Ümlaut - "The Celestial Sphere" in contrast to Darren Harpers' work is fractured, short-formed pieces adjoining each other with a disjointed tension, sometimes off-kilter but always focused with a thought-provoking structure. Ümlaut navigates his way through contrasting and conflicting elements and carries the listener through a maze of articulations and random jazz-infused electronic segments, choosing to avoiding traditional form and creating something uniquely dynamic and engaging, all wrapped-up inside a sonic cosmos.

Issued on dual-format, limited edition tape and mini double CD featuring individually hand-bound and hand-cut collage CD wallets made from vintage materials and papers, a special print edition of five x ten designs for the [tape] O-cards to house the c45 cassettes. Each CD copy is hand-numbered and packed inside glassine bags, tape copies are packed inside a clear eco bag.

Summer Easel (five excerpts)

Sometime in 2016, I came upon the California-based electronic musician, releasing his organic, evolving and highly textural synthesized compositions as r beny. I followed and watched many of his YouTube videos, where he showcased his modular skiff and various digital synthesizers (I particularly enjoyed watching the Novation Peak ambient showcase, which inspired me to purchase that synth). Throughout the years, I've been enchanted (as I'm sure some of you also have) with his particular aesthetic in creating warm, lush, and melancholic pads that stretch out their fingers and brush the worry away. When, in 2018, he got noticed by Dauw imprint, I reached out to premiere a track from his Saudade album. Since then, Austin Cairns' creations have continued to sell out - you can still buy digital copies of eistla (2018), echo's verse (2019), and natural fiction (2020) via his Bandcamp. By now, he has established a solid following, so it isn't easy to be useful with my words on HC. I can also say the same about the UK-based quiet details imprint, which has amassed a gathering of my all-time favourite ambient artists and relentlessly releases an amazing album every single month. This is almost a community now of all like-minded musicians sharing the label's aesthetic in creating pieces as an interpretation of the platform's name. I cannot keep up and cover every single album on there, so you might as well follow along on your own, and I promise that you won't be disappointed [for example, I failed to give my buddy James Murray proper coverage of his latest album, Weeds, thinking that, yeah, okay, you must already know that it's amazing]. Today, I'm dipping my toe back into the myriad of sonic seas and atmospheres with a track premiere from Cairns' upcoming album, discerned in the fugue of streams, because I think that it is very special.

Since its inception, Kuboraum has been shaping a vibrant community of people through countless events, collaborations, shared experiences, and art residencies. It is exactly this community of people, distinguished by its own values, culture, and aesthetics, that in turn shaped the project itself, allowing it to flourish and evolve genuinely.

The Kuboraum Sound Residency was born out of the desire to narrate an inclusive and diverse aesthetic through collaborations with artists from the contemporary experimental music panorama. Free from genre constraints, as a stylistic and political choice, it navigates through the spectrum of sound to demonstrate that very different artists, offering completely different genres, can organically cohabitate and enter a fluid dialogue with each other.

When listening to the compilation, the feeling will be that of listening to an album, where each contribution is not on its own but exists in relation to all the others. This project ultimately aims at creating new paths for those who keep their ears and minds open.

Vegetal Negatives is a game of sonic mutations, mimicry, inversions, and association inspired by a text called "On pataphotograms", by the French writer René Daumal – a quasi-metaphysical essay that toys with breaking the conceived separateness of natural forms through poetic imagination. 

The four electroacoustic compositions on the album combine and arrange field recordings, electronic feedback, Buchla and ARP synthesizers, bowl gong and harmonium, textures of detailed acoustic sound, and sustained tones with gentle microtonal beating into a precise musical narrative. She juxtaposes recordings of rooms and empty vessels, natural and artificial climates, spontaneous and staged events. Ahti draws upon Annea Lockwood's ideas about associative movements between sounds based on shared characteristics and sonic energy. Her approach to field recordings is neither diaristic, documentaristic, nor purely acousmatic, but rather it starts out from somewhere in between these notions: the sounds hover between abstraction and the deeply familiar, moving into a realm of poetic metaphor where they are set in relation to each other, fleetingly mirroring or shadow-dancing. Acoustic environments mutate into synthetically derived shadow forms. 

The opening track, "Coastal Inversion”, moves from a seemingly familiar seascape into an ocean of wavelike synthetic staccato patterns, turning itself inside-out on the shore, before diving back into a sea of resonance. ”Rooftop gardens” arranges a series of largely unprocessed field recordings into a dream-logic sequence of upward movement towards the clouds. On the other side, ”Symbiogenesis” brews a slow evolution of wet, airy and earthy sounds and resonant friction. The closing track, ”Chora”, imagines a meditative space of breath: filter resonance posing as organ pipes against a backdrop of breezy industrial hoovers merges halfway with a harmonium improvisation that foregrounds the frictions of the wooden instrument itself, just before filtering out into resonant harmony.
