Invisible Inc

It was just curiosity that brought her to the psychic — at least, that's what she'd been telling herself repeatedly all the way here. She'd never considered herself much of a superstitious type and, until recently, she'd have balked at the idea of reading a horoscope, so tarot readings were completely new and uncharted territory. She'd have laughed at herself a year ago, but back then she couldn't have fathomed the events that would soon play out.

Tasked with delivering the next release on Mugwump's Subfield imprint are cult Sheffield act HIEM, the duo made up of Venini band member Nick Eastwood and The All Seeing I's David Boswell aka Bozzwell. A new addition to their string of releases on Crosstown Rebels, Eskimo and Nang, 'Esoteric' brings a dose of ritualistic chants and dark psychedelic rhythms, backed up by remixes from Canadian disco-tech outfit Ami Moderne and Smala boss Manfredas.

The machine sprung to life with a great electric roar, inside it buzzed and hummed sending out an enthusiastic noise which echoed with a precise tone and texture. This was the flange factory, where dreams were made and the noises of nightmares echoed between empty walls as dancers moved back and forth. The lights began to flicker and flash as the electrical currents pulsed and vibrated with a scattergun sense of purpose. Soon they would be lost beneath the fog and the sounds of a world beyond... 

Lucas Croon is a producer on who it is wise to keep close tabs, he has released music previously on Themes For Great Cities and Aiwo. Now he lends a hand to a new split release on Feines Tier, an imprint based in Cologne. His track "Flange Factory" is destined to do wonders in the hands of well informed dj's.

Following on from last years's "Mondo Organico" compilation, the latest Invisible Inc mini-compilation "Mondo Ritmo", as its title suggests, sets its sights firmly on rhythm and percussion.
Featuring a global array of artists hailing from Argentina to Senegal and everywhere inbetween, the influences and styles on display include latin, afro, dub, dancehall, experimental, acid and more and are guaranteed to expand your mind and move your body.
Initially this EP was intended to be Dancefloor Detonators Vol. 3 but things are fluid at INVINC HQ and the EP seemed to mutate as it grew!
However, lacking in dancefloor killers this EP most certainly is not. Proven and tested dancefloor bombs are Mytron & Balam's opening track "Cabasa Loca" which label boss GK Machine has been spinning at his Wrong Party nights and elsewhere for the last 6 months or so, resulting in track ID requests on several occasions...and the house/dancehall hybrid floor filler "Wicked Can't Run" by LA producer Tom Chasteen (Exist Dance/Dub Club) featuring legendary Jamaican DJ and toaster U Brown, and mixed by equally legendary producer/keyboardist David Harrow who first came to our attention through his regular keyboard contributions to all things On-U Sound related in the 1980s.
The rest of the tracks may not be peak time bangers but they are sure to please the more esoteric and adventurous dancefloors out there....it's an honour to have on board Calypso Records head honcho Thomass Jackson, Thomash (Voodoohop) and Gats (Suçuarana / Curuba) who together as Changa Boys bring in Senegalese drummer Ndiaxo dal Jaam, and finally the little-known Machine and percussionist Congo Caveman.

INVINC 38 Gamma Knife - Kuts LP [clips] Out 16 Dec 2024

It’s been a good few years since we've seen a full release from Sordid Sound System aka Stuart Evans on Invisible Inc and the wait is very worth it - it’s a most welcome return.
It's possibly even some of Evans’ best work and so it’s a pleasure to have him back on board the good ship Inc.  
With the ten year anniversary of Invisible Inc coming in May it seems very fitting to include something by Sordid Sound System amongst the flurry of releases coming out in the run-up to that occasion.
Remarkably, this music is even harder to pigeon-hole than usual...even for Stu, who’s known for his raw, analogue, live takes that veer between dub and post-kraut, this is definitely quite "different": part surf acid, part dub, part psych-exotica, part motorik...and that's just the A-side. The B-side leans more towards ambience but of the oddball experimental soundtrack variety...a thoroughly enjoyable ride.

The second volume of Invisible Inc’s 10-year anniversary celebrations has landed, hot on the heels of the scorching first volume.

Where Volume 1 focussed on the dub-style, electronic and ambient side of the label’s output, the second volume leans towards the ‘psych’ side of the label.

As has been a consistent pattern with the label in its decade of existence is its ethos of releasing new and exclusive tracks as well as releasing on vinyl pre-existing tracks that only ever saw the light of day in the digital realm. This compilation is no different. Alongside exclusive new material from Anna vs June, E Ruscha V, Banda Magnética, Exotic Gardens, Kanot and a Coyote remix of Sordid Sound System we also have for the first time on vinyl two tracks by Hena and Futurum that went somewhat under the radar first time round and really deserved to be shared with the wider world.

Hena is Ukrainian producer Volodymyr Gnatenko. I first heard "Nuan" in a mix by Andrea Ida & immediately needed to know what it was. Pure peyote-powered desert music that went under the radar and needed to be heard by more!

"Is It Balearic?" label boss Coyote does the honours and remixes the title track from Sordid Sound System's "Gimme Fever" LP turning it into a hypnotic acid dub mantra.

Swedish duo Kanot are Anton Kolbe (Tross) and Jesper Jarold (Fontän) joining forces to make dreamrock for psychonauts.

Also from Sweden are Futurum who sent me a promo of "Prado" over two years ago. A regular feature in my warm-up DJ sets, it's well overdue it being pressed up on wax!

Exotic Gardens is the alias of Peaking Lights' Aaron Coyes through which he finds a space for acidic experimentation enhanced by live dubstyle mixer operations.

LA-resident Eddie Ruscha, a frequent visitor to the label under his cosmic Secret Circuit alias, appears for the first time under his experimental ambient E Ruscha V moniker.

Banda Magnética is the brainchild of Hugo Capablanca (Discos Capablanca) & Borja Caro (Metametal) offering a mindpuzzler of improvised musique concrète.

Athens-based Anna vs June returns to the fold and closes the proceedings with a song of love, relationships, vulnerability and patience drenched in dreamy electronics.

It seemed like everything that could go wrong went wrong. Few days after the lockdown, his PC broke down completely. 

Without money to spend and a lot of free time, he decided to use his old laptop again and pour his restless mind into what gives him meaning and a sense of purpose. He started making music. 

Even though the process was frustrating and everything seemed to go slow, he powered through and worked with what he had. In the end, through all the hardship, he created something meaningful. 

He finished his release and went out for a walk. Things were looking up again.

Animaux is a six track release by Justas Jelisejevas, it’s his second self-released mini-album that revolves around topics of animate reality, visual arts and music.
The idea for the release came into fruition through sonic experiments made in the past while looking for ways to substitute human singing with other sounds. In simple terms animals are the singers and lead
performers in each track.
The instrumental parts of every track are made to support vocalizations of animals and animal voices are chosen to resonate with digital instruments. Animaux explores and interprets wild animals trough electronic music.

The amazon-naut is Bep Kororoti's second album, the LP arrives at Modern Obscure Music after his mid-2020 release “Love is the way", an EP in collaboration with African singer Akin that aimed to be one of the hits of the summer when the first restrictions were announced during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, Clubs, and festivals from half of the planet had to cancel plans for the rest of the year.

This second album inspired by the ancient space warrior who brought joy and new knowledge to this little community from the Amazon river is composed of clear ethnic influences, loaded with minimalist rhythms and fragments of film sequences. The LP goes hand in hand with the reinterpretation of the Brazilian Koyapos tribe myth by Marcio Matos, a visual artist in charge of giving face and image to the mesmerizing  Portuguese label Principe Discos since its inception.

Hard Fist: How did you discover this track? Why did you choose to edit it? 

ID_UA: Glad present an edit to a Ukrainian singer with a unique Timbre of voice. Katya Chilly group is an independent band that combines folk tunes with ethnic instruments and electronic sound. I heard the original song on a YouTube video with a live performance that took place in the Kiev house of the architect. This slow Edit is suitable for radio podcasts, home listening, and party startups.

Three years in the making only to be held up almost another year due to COVID and now finally seeing the light of day, is this brooding monster of a record by Brussels based Strapontin, aka multi-disciplinary artist Patrick Belmont.

Clocking in at over 35-minutes the record is almost album length and spans a multitude of depths and moods with elements of techno, new wave, rock 'n' roll, house and tribal…...all glued together with a uniquely sleazy atmosphere.

Add to this a heads-down-no-nonsense darkroom beast of a remix by techno maestro Sascha Funke and the package is complete.

Strapontin provides us with some insight:
“It started with a desire to move away a bit from my 'dancefloor' side and go into more undefined fields, I wanted to work with blurry sensations that I can't understand. I like mixed feelings. Dramatex 300 is made of that ambivalent mood. The voice is saying 'I'm feeling empty' and 'I'm feeling healthy' at the same time. I like that paradox. Eunuque is a song but is also a character I will develop in a short movie (which will act as the 'music video' of the song). The Eunuque is a character full of anger yet he doesn't want to fight nor has he a target to aim at. A restrained aggressivity is boiling inside him/it that has no opportunity to escape from the body and gain release. The song is the fever he feels from these inner battles. I think Le Bain d'Huile and Anti-sceptical have the same slow and angry feeling. I'm proud of these tracks because they are a bit mysterious to me and it feels like they controlled me more than I controlled them.”

Mishell and Lott are two close friends from Israel, currently based in Berlin where they invest their time in music production heavily inspired by their hometown and their younger years. CDDOMA is a DJ duo from Moscow, whose sets were played, probably in all famous places of the capital: Enthusiast, Powerhouse, NII, Strelka Bar, Simachev, Propaganda, Dom Kultur, Shweppes Bar, Kolokol, etc. Their podcasts have been released on Dutch Bordello a Parigi and American Dream Chimney, and you can also find a mix recorded as part of the IPA Session in Sosna And Lipa Bar. The duo played lives at 20ft in Kyiv, TESTFM in St. Petersburg, Red Light Radio in Amsterdam, and the guys attracted the Japanese guest Que Sakamoto for NNW Radio. We're happy to join these ranks.
