This work is in a style I can only describe as classical blues, if that’s even a thing. Clearly the note to note relationships and intervals are at the core of this piece. There are moments of harmonic structure and counterpoint, but the NARRATIVE is all important and is what makes the piece bluesy in a classical sense. It’s no doubt borne of COVIDized days of seclusion which really had our minds and souls wondering about life’s paths, like a midnight gumshoe trying to ferret out the source of his inability to solve his own great mystery of love, yet he's for hire to solve other’s. I pulled images of an imperfect but good souled man, slightly a paradox - a Tom Waits sort, sitting in a late night diner, wearing a tux with his tie undone, cigarette hanging in his mouth with a whisky sour on the table, running through his notes in a little notepad he carries, still using the same flip phone he’s had for twenty years. And no matter how much concentration he musters, he becomes total mush at just the slightest familiar motion of a whisper of hair on some lady he doesn’t even know sitting at the bar. But that trait, that slight all too familiar movement, pulls his thoughts to the source of his own inner tragedy.

Brad Rau received a scholarship to attend New England Conservatory (NEC), and received a Master’s degree in 2015 with academic honors. At NEC, he studied classical guitar under Eliot Fisk who was the last pupil of Andres Segovia. Brad has performed in countless masterclasses with instructors including; Sharon Isbin, and Andrew York both Grammy award winning guitarists. Brad’s personal learning methods have enabled him to memorizing over 8 hours of the most difficult repertoire for the classical guitar. Brad was a semi-finalist in the International Texas Guitar Competition of 2008.  Brad currently studies under Grammy awarding winnings guitarist Jason Vieaux. Brad has been performing music for over 20 years all over Boston, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware, as a classical guitarist, rock guitarist, and rock drummer.  Brad currently teaching music lessons at Taylor’s Music in West Chester, and performs every Friday at the Brandywine Distillery.  Brad has mentored hundreds of students of all ages, styles and levels. Many of Brad’s students have gone on to develop their own music careers and teaching studios.

Brad’s unique teaching style combines music, physics, philosophy and humor, making him a well-rounded instructor for a variety of students.
