The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.

Music is my best friend. Born in the late 60’s, spent my childhood listening to the radio and was influenced by Motown, Disco, Pop, Rock and then as the music scene started to splinter into Mod, Punk, New Romantics, Electronic, Breakdance and so in. Then came the “Chicago House” scene just at the time I started club life. As soon as I heard Serious Intention “You Don’t Know” it was like being baptised with frequency and that was it. 

I had no intention of further education, career or settling down and starting a family. I just wanted to go out, hear/listen and feel that music and let it move me in the dance floor. 

I was there throughout the best years of the UK dance scene, from house to acid to rave to jungle to drum and bass to breaks, deep house, trance, progressive and so much more. 

1965 - 2000 was the best period in musics history and the UK was the best place in earth to be, we had it all and gave the world more! 

Never to be repeated again in this “system of things.”
