Before moving to San Francisco, Iranian-Canadian artist AIDA got her start in one of the world's more unlikely, yet nourishing, rave scenes tucked away in the southwest corner of Canada: Vancouver. There, amongst the basement raves, forest parties and yeast-perfumed gigs on top of bakeries, she found a home amidst a small but strong scene of record-digging minimal lovers, finding power in their pure passion for music. This is where she started, though over time her sound has developed along with a lot of the minimal scene, touching on electro, breaks and progressive house.

The latter is the focus of her RA Podcast, which comes amidst a year-long sabbatical from her dayjob to focus on music. It seems like the extra time is paying off: she's playing out more than ever, around the world, and playing more kinds of music, too. This mix revolves entirely around her love for the original wave of progressive house, gathered from records chosen over a period of weeks and then put together with a firm but idiosyncratic touch, as she explains below. It's as much a testament to the timelessness of this music as the cyclical nature of dance music, though it's also a bit of history lesson, a reminder of the broad world of sounds and rhythms beyond the au courant revival.

When she's not DJing, AIDA also runs a record label rooted in activism around her Iranian heritage. Inspired partly by the Woman Life Freedom movement in Iran, her imprint Apranik Records focuses on artists of Iranian and Persian heritage from the country and across the diaspora, as well as raising money for charities and nonprofits.

Good news! Pacific Spirit is back after a small hiatus with our first mix of 2024. This time around it's a 3 hour live recording from one of Pittsburgh's finest, Aaron Clark. Here's a bit of back story on the recording:

In October 2022, Hot Mass threw a fundraiser for the Kyiv Angels – a group doing work to support Ukrainian civilians. We tapped Kyiv’s Closer resident Shakolin, and I took the warm-up set of the night. This is the recording of my part of the night. I dusted off a lot of old favourite records and leaned into a slow build that I try to set the club up with, tugging the floor between psychedelic rhythms, trippy techno and pops of house. This recording landed in that bullseye opening zone I aim for, and I hope it transports you to my favourite little dance floor in the world."

We are delighted to welcome our next guest for Re-Leaf Radio, the Berlin based, DJ/Producer 131bpm.

Settled in the queer party scene, 131bpm is a dancefloor trouble maker. Influenced by various electronic music sub-genres like vocal house, Detroit classic electro-breaks, 90s progressive and Latin music, his sets are always sweaty and sexy, scattered with catchy basslines, nasty vocals and bouncy percussions.

This vinyl only mix starts with an ode to New York early 90’s dance music, where 131bpm just came back from, loaded with 12inch weapons ready to burn down dancefloors. It progressively switches then to a less serious and more UK vibe, inspired by the queer northern late 90’s scene.

Thanks so much to 131bpm for taking us on a wild ride to 90's house heaven and back!

"This mix is part of my closing set recorded at UMI Brussels in March this year. You will hear vintage house, progressive house, and tech house gems in there which I'd bought in a record shop in Barcelona the week before. I blended those records with newer techno-leaning releases that are pitched down to match the tempo and energy of the house records. I picked this set as my Horst warm-up mix because it’s the perfect foreshadowing of what I'm preparing for at the festival: cheeky vocals, percussion, and vintage acid/tech/progressive house."

For over a decade, COHN has been crafting his unique blend of house music. The DJ and producer, from London, combines crisp beats and rich synth lines to ignite speakers and dancefloors with his disco and Italo-infused creations. Now, he arrives at Bordello with a new EP, “Kafka in the Sheets”, featuring four tracks.

The EP kicks off with “Margiela in the Streets”. Driven by a steady snare and a pulsating arpeggiator, a soaring melody of analogue arcs sails skyward.“Balearic Sun” awakens the listener with birdsong and bongos. A relaxing, revitalising and re-energising experience, guiding hearts and minds through an audio oasis of light wind instruments and soothing samples.

The energy ramps up with the powerful “Uptown and Queens.” A HI-NRG-inspired rhythm is set to a steady march, delivering a workout of wry smiles and bold builds. The EP concludes with “Let’s Groove On”, a track that welcomes the dawn. Classic hi-hats and toms are garnished with a low whistle while juddering vocals push the track forward, making it the perfect last dance before sunrise.

Berlin based Luigi Di Venere is one of the most exciting presences in electronic music. His musical style is rooted in Italo house and cosmic Italo disco, techno, New Beat, trance, and he is especially known for his luxurious cosmic soundscapes and explosive combinations. Di Venere also runs his own club nights including Maximum Joy in Berlin and Power Dance Club in Athens and Berlin and he is a regular feature at Berghain/Panorama Bar. 

Di Venere can be found managing the Phonica Records satellite in Berlin’s The Stores X, and expanding his label with Neu Verboten, Philoxenia Records. Di Venere enjoys a number of exciting musical collaborations, including Banana Moon (with Massimiliano Pagliara), SolidAir (with Jules Etienne), Affekt Unit (with Neu Verboten).
