Before learning how to write music I was originally a (not particularly good) percussionist & drummer for a while. That background definitely influences how I write, with rhythm being a big focus. Something on display in a lot of my music and definitely in this track.

Catnip Meanders

This is my first try to compose a song with lyrics in my native language (german). 

It is about chasing a dream. Split in two parts. 
part one tries to describe how dreams invade us. chemical neuronal.
part two tries to capture a dream to keep it in memory.

The song is based on a complex melody model in which two different main parts exist in different keys. To add to the transition, I had to go back a long way and string a lot of chords together.

Die Konstellation aus der Träume entstehen
Wie leuchtende Speere durchdringen sie die Sphäre
Der Angriff auf unser Bewusstsein beginnt

durch das Universum gleiten
Doch wenn der Traum einmal entrinnt
und du dich kaum an ihn entsinnst
bleibt nicht viel Zeit ihn zu erzählen
man muss ihn in deinen Augen lesen

Und das Licht, welches au deinen Augen strahlt
fällt wie ein Pinsel, der Farben auf die Leinwand malt
doch die Farben die du wählst,
verblassen in der Realität
Sie sind gewählt aus den Weiten des Traum’s wo sie schweben
Sie erzählen von den Zeiten, wo alles Glück in deinem Leben
einfach wie ein Apfel
an den Bäumen hing


Doch die Säure und die Kerne
gehören dazu - oh wie gerne
wäre ich die Frucht an diesem Baum
zusammen mit dir - in deinem Traum

PART TWO
Was wir auch tun, um uns auszuruhen
unsere Gedanken zum schlafen zusammentun
So sehr wir versuchen die Traumwelt zu besuchen
Es will nicht gelingen dorthin zu springen

erst mit Halluzinogenen Substanzen 
versuchen wir gemeinsam in den Schlaf zu tanzen
Durch Opferbereitschaft, mit voller Hingabe
fördern wir Unterbewusstsein zu Tage
kognitiv luzide Momente
bringen symbolische Fragmente
setzen Akzente aus dem Zwischenraum
entrissen aus unserem Traum

Die Süße an diese Erinnerung
so flüchtig und vergänglich
Vielleicht gelingt es mir mit dir zusammen
einen Zaubertraum zu fangen
der bis in alle Ewigkeit uns verbindet und vereint 
eine Erinnerung die uns zusammenhält

Ein Funke aus unserer Vergangenheit
Der unser Feuer am Leben hält
Doch wenn die Sonne den Tag erhellt
und wie ein Pfeil vom Bogen nach oben schnellt
ist es wieder die Zeit, die rinnt
und die Suche nach dem Traum beginnt von neuem

Wenn deine Hand am Morgen, neben mir, durch meine Haare fährt
sehe ich das strahlen in deinen Augen, und weiß, es war die Mühe wert
gemeinsam haben wir es vollbracht
unseren Traum gefangen,  mitten in der Nacht
Er geht nicht erneut verloren, wir haben ihn geboren
er gehört zu unserem Leben genauso wie das Streben
nach Glück und Zuversicht
und unserer Zweisamkeit
