Ok, this song is about relationships. 

It all starts off slow and empty; because you're just doing what you're doing.
Then you finally meet someone and it get's exciting again. 
When you're finally together, it feels so amazing...
Feels like life has so much color and adventure.
Being together feels amazing.

BUT when (for whatever reason) it doesn't work out, it feels empty again. 
Losing a bestfriend sucks; so for a while, fragments of memories keep popping up and honestly, it's numbing. 

In the end, all of that effort/love feels like a lesson and ultimately... a joke.
