Emotive, deep, soulful. A few of the descriptors that one can use to describe Daniel[i] and his body of music. Whether the sound is an ambient soundscape, or that of a thrilling techno story, the breadth, and quality of his releases are undoubtable. Today, the Aachen-based DJ and producer is joined by Purl, aka Illuvia, another incredible producer who has graced many a Delayed top 10 and curated list. The two combined is such a sublime pairing and we’re incredibly happy to premiere, ‘Compensate’ off their forthcoming EP, the third release under Daniel[i]’s own imprint, Whispering Signals.

Coming in under the A2 slot in the four-track EP, Compensate draws from both producers’ mastery of downtempo, atmospheric production. Evoking visions of distant tundras swept by swirling winds. The air is crystal clear as a night sky filled with stars that shine down upon a lone traveler moving swiftly but surely through the lands to an unknown destination.

These field recordings listen to the sound of unceded and sacred land. I pay my respects to the Dharug people, the Gundungurra people, the Gunaikurnai people, the Boon Wurrung people, the Wurundjeri people, the Djab Wurrung and the Jardwardjali people as the Traditional Custodians of these lands, seas, skies, ecosystems, and waterways which I have been so honoured to bear witness to, listen to, and pass through.

The Lilac Island in Space is inhabitable only by auditory imagination. An ecosystem shrouded in nostalgia, memory, and all shades of purple. The original recordings from this space were destroyed in an unprecedented collision between microchip and wooden-floorboard. Now existing only as an artifact in my mind, I aim to retrace my footsteps and return to a place of past, present, and future. I hope you make your own trail to follow on this island, and find your own nook to explore.

Perhaps I’ll see you, perhaps I won’t.

Raised in the underground music scene of Buenos Aires, recent years have seen Blume (@keinblume) continue to hone her vision in Europe - first in Amsterdam and now Berlin. With a complex approach to beat programming, hip-hop inspired use of samples and a melding of odd melodies and experimental textures, her sets are distinctive, technical and enthralling in equal measure. 

A passionate contributor to the scene, Blume hosts the bi-monthly show "The Otherness" on @noodsradio, and runs the record store Format Wars, which provides her with another channel to express her unique tastes - from lavish ambient to bracing jungle and beyond. Originally a digital shop, Format Wars will move into a physical space in early December 2022. 

Blume’s Patterns of Perception 104 is an homage to a multitude of formative moments in Berlin: indelible, visceral musical experiences that have shaped her vision and being. 
Crystal clear reflections of hazy sequences in which the unexpected became the norm. An emotional connection of disparate times as unfettered energy warps into mind-bending experimentation. Sharp polyrhythms expanding out of mesmerising, high-speed techno trips. Endless energy and motion. 
This mix reflects the feeling and eclecticism of odd Berlin nights - the discovery, the euphoria and the memories that never die.

The first two hours of the second show are for Alberto Iniesta, underground hero from the Madrid scene, fantastic dj and selector, who delivers a wonderful ambient trip. 

After him Camu (ID: 2:05:00), one of the responsible for Espacio perpendicular and Calma events, takes over with a listening set where combines ambient, experimental music and other immersive and massaging-brain sounds.

The closing  (ID: 3:27:35) is for another Calma member and part a_mal_gam_a, project: Josephine´ soundscapes, who presents a new series of DJ sets under the title Vanishing Point, listening sessions to fade away. In this first chapter, recorded at Espacio Perpendicular, Josephine plots an escape into outer space, from which we'll never return.

Partnering with the Barcelona-based Mostra Festival to showcase some of the recorded sets during their second edition. Mostra is an independent small-format festival of avant-garde and experimental electronic music held in Barcelona on Easter weekend. Menou's live set was showcased on the first day of performances at Hangar centre for art research and production.

Amsterdam-based collective Wanderwelle presents an electro-acoustic adaptation of one of their favourite stories, which has haunted them for many years. Wat gebeurde er met sergeant Massuro (What Happened to Sergeant Massuro) is a little-known tale written by master storyteller Harry Mulisch, in which he has thoughtfully succeeded in interweaving strong anti-colonial ideas with mythical elements. In letter form, the story recounts the fate of Sergeant Massuro, who, during a mission in the former Dutch colony of Netherlands New Guinea, slowly but surely turns to stone under mysterious circumstances. It appears that certain unspeakable actions of his past may have brought this fate upon him... 

Wat gebeurde er met Sergeant Massuro, published in 1957, is a rarity in Dutch literature, as there was little critical writing during the time when New Guinea was still under colonial authority of the Netherlands. The Dutch retained sovereignty over Western New Guinea until 1962.

Drawing upon a vast array of electronic and acoustic instruments, alongside archival and field recordings, Wanderwelle expanded the story's horizons with a sonic dimension, making it accessible to a new generation of listeners and readers. The artists consulted the author's estate, his publisher, and literary scholars during the creation of the album to fully grasp the extent of the author's intricate writing and thoughts. 

Given the deeply personal significance of Harry Mulisch’s story to the artists, this record serves as the inaugural release for their label. Maalstroom is not your usual label. It is a public archive that will feature some of Wanderwelle’s most personal projects.

Harry Mulisch (1927-2010) is considered one of the most prolific writers of Dutch post-war literature. He wrote more than eighty novels, plays, essays, poems, and philosophical reflections. A frequent theme in Mulisch’s work is the Second World War, and he often incorporated ancient legends or myths, drawing on Greek mythology, Jewish mysticism, urban legends, and politics.

The artists would like to express their sincere gratitude to the Stichting Vrienden van het Harry Mulisch Huis and Cultuurfonds, without whom this project would not have been possible.
