"I close my eyes inside a dark hangar. I wake up naked in the heart of a Greek island garden. I can hear a bee sucking nectar from the most spectacular flower I have ever seen. I get up and walk. I crash into a ramification of 4 rivers that connect in a sound spiral that hypnotizes. I sit the hours that become seconds. Meditation. The river feeds the trees on the bank. The smell of fruit salad is intoxicating. We carry eden. I open my eyes and continue into the hangar. It's over."

Hanyo van Oosterom (@sonofchi) aka Son of Chi started the ambient collective CHI in 1983. Jacobus Derwort, a musician friend with Hanyo was the first musician to join CHI. Together, they went to the magic rock “The Kallikatsou” on the island of Patmos, Greece. Here, Hanyo had stayed for months in a cave for some deep soul-searching. He heard CHI in the silence of the night like a message from out of space. Being together at the Kallikatsou they shaped the foundation of CHI, making handmade flutes from local bamboo and conducting field recordings of water, crickets, owls, goats, wind, etc. After several years of collaborations with musicians like Willem Cramer and Michel Banabila, they decided to start together the beautiful The Chi Factory with which released (with the help of Ario Farahani and his label Astral Industries - @astralindustries) some of the most beautiful records in the history of ambient music. Following the passing of group member J. Derwort in 2019, Hanyo van Oosterom’s legacy work brings about the next evolution of the Chi project: Son of Chi. The sound of Hanyo Oosterom unfurls lushly overgrown 4th world drones, voices, and field recordings, naturally drifting between time-slowing beats, FM radio interference, and languid instrumentation combining the western retro-futuristic point of view, the New Age, and the ancestral eastern tradition.

Mostra 2023 will take place from 6 to 9 April in Barcelona, featuring a total of 30 artists across two distinctive venues of the city.

"Motivated by both a deep love - and repugnance - of NYC’s post-pandemic scene, I still feel like there are some sonic and emotional voids in the city that need plumbing. I idealise the atmosphere of New York City’s ‘80s clubbing golden age. All you need to do is watch footage of the way people moved their bodies at these parties to understand. If I was throwing a house party, this is what you'd hear - a set doused in my own personal taste and bias. As another young person raised on shuffle, this comes with a degree of chaos and inconsistency, like the track selection. With our collectively shortened attention spans, however, I don’t see that as a bad thing (as much as I like going zombie mode and vegging out to the same kick pattern for hours on end).

This mix is actually.. mixed. Intro’d with a playful Sextile remix and punctuated with two emotional and personal heavy-hitters - ‘Adjacent Casualty’ by Kumo99 and ‘I Am Not a Casualty’ by Louisahh and Maelstrom. Keyword: Casualty. I’m not afraid to drop some cringe or profundity or poetry. Maybe a song here and there that isn’t electronic at all. Dancing and clubbing, to me, is sacred catharsis. I want to tailor an atmosphere for people who desire the same release."

Suddenly a peak in the distance, little by little the profile of the castle is drawn.  There where I was heading. Sailing and floating on the salty wave. I am already in Barcelona, I can already listen to Mostra."

Avsluta (@avsluta) is a London-based DJ, live performer and curator. While her output is diverse in both her live performances and DJ sets alike, it most often taps into the realms of downtempo, UK-bass and off-kilter deep techno, navigating the in-betweens of ambient and dance music. Lucie runs Introspective Electronics (@introspective_electronics), a platform exploring the vast diversity of ambient, downtempo and electronica. Together with the London-based DJ and producer Alicia, she co-curates Terra Obscura (@terra-obscura-london), a quarterly event series focusing on chill-out-tinged UK bass. In collaboration with Christian Duka and IKLECTIK, she co-organises SONIC GARDEN, a series of experimental ambient and downtempo events at IKLECTIK's Old Paradise Yard. Over the past few years, Lucie has shared line-ups with the likes of Donato Dozzy, DJ Nobu, Primal Code and more, and played live and DJ sets in the UK and around Europe. Her recent releases include solo EP on Secuencias Temporales and compilation contributions for Huinali Recordings and Knekelhuis.

Khessä has brought his sound to numerous ears, being invited to podcast series of national and international labels and musical projects such as: @KvltöRecords (Mexico), @NorteSeries (Colombia), @Ephemeral (Russia), NYXII (Canada), @ SeisRecords (Colombia), where he has shown some of his diverse selection and permanent construction and musical exploration.

In 2020 and at the height of the global situation, he managed to integrate his first single into what would also be the first album released by Medellinstyle called "El canto de los dioses".

Originally from Manizales, Colombia, he has been able to witness the constant growth of the electronic movement in this city and has managed to share a booth with artists such as Óscar Mulero (Spain), Speedy J (Holland), Zadig (France), Polygonia² (Germany), Stefan Vincent (Holland), Shlomo (France), Adriana López (Colombia), Xhei (Argentina), Fixeer (Mexico).

In anticipation of the 2023 edition of the MOSTRA Festival, with whom we joined forces to present you music from some of the most exciting and talented producers and DJs worldwide, in the next couple of weeks, we'll feature several truly outstanding music tales. 

The first mix in our 'Delayed x Mostra' mix series comes from the incredible French producer and DJ based in Germany, Aa Sudd, who has in this past year released two of the most groundbreaking and avant-garde albums of the moment: one with Konduku as Konsudd and another released just a month or so ago on Midgar. 

Aa Sudd's mix is a true masterpiece exploring the dub's hypnotic and atmospheric realms. With intricate and captivating polyrhythms, this mix takes listeners on a psychedelic journey through sound. The various rhythms blend seamlessly, creating a truly otherworldly experience when you listen to it on your headphones.

Aa Sudd will play on the festival's opening day, Thursday, April 6, from 9-11 pm at the Hangar.

The pandemic highlighted the importance of local communities, local institutions and local support for one another. We at Mostra continue the commitment to our Local, not only by programming local artists on the line-up, but also through how we choose our suppliers and other collaborations in the city. And we go further: an exhibitors' Fira for the duration of the festival, generating our own media content during the year through MostRadio, the Mostra’m series of debates, seminars and conferences in parallel with the festival, and our ExtraMostra series of events in venues across Barcelona place Mostra’s roots firmly in their local environment.

Inclusive
Mostra is a festival that reflects on the realities that surround us in electronic music. We are committed to breaking the gender gap in a scene that is traditionally very masculinised. We try to reflect this in our programming, in our team, and in the values we promote: we want a friendly and safe space where there is no room for any kind of violence, and where respect for diversity is fundamental. We have developed our own protocol with a gender perspective, and we seek to raise awareness in a transversal way throughout the project.

Sustainable
Mostra is a festival that seeks to be a social and environmental benchmark through its actions. We follow the most up-to-date sustainable protocols and develop good practice in relation to both city and planet. We have created the role of Sustainability Director who leads and implements an action plan based on sustainable experiences; we limit the programming of artists from overseas to reduce our carbon footprint; and we are committed to contracting and collaborating with social integration and social and solidarity organisations from Barcelona.

Delayed x Mostra: Aa Sudd

In anticipation of the 2023 edition of the MOSTRA Festival, with whom we joined forces to present you music from some of the most exciting and talented producers and DJs worldwide, in the next couple of weeks, we'll feature several truly outstanding music tales.

After an incredible mix from Aa Sudd, which we featured last week, the bar stays high with another mind-bending mix from Auxiliary affiliate Michael Watters aka Sciama. For Sciama, music is all about creating a world in which the listener can explore the many facets of human emotion, a journey inward that uncovers both the light and dark within us. 
And this mix is no different. The deep, trippy techno beats create a hypnotic atmosphere that transports the listener to the underground world, so deep that no sunlight ever penetrates. The exceptional programming and seamless transitions between tracks demonstrate Sciama's mastery of DJing. Every element of the mix has been flawlessly executed, making it a true pleasure to listen to. With this mix, Sciama has given us a taste of what's to come at the Mostra Festival, and it's sure to be an unforgettable experience.

Sciama is on opening duties on the closing day of the festival, Sunday, April 9, from 12pm - 2pm
