For this 60th episode, we invited the talented producer Caldera who enlights us with a very beautiful and deep mix.
If you don't know him yet; since 2012, Caldera has been creating a unique and personal blend of Techno and Bass music with a love for detail and a dedicated sounddesign that immerses listeners into imaginary worlds.
His experiments with drums and rhythms result in grooves that explore a deeper side of dance music while leaving bpm and genre restrictions behind.
Caldera's creations have found a home on labels such as Berlin's Nummer Music, Chicago's Kimochi Sound and Bristol's Pressure Dome while his Loop LF moniker has previously been a mainstay on London based Well Steet Records.
Right now we're eagerly waiting for his upcoming release on @melifera_records.

When we asked the artist for a few words about the mix he told us, that the inspiration for it stemmed from a preference for slower, more meditative transitions and a deliberate, gradual increase in intensity.
The mix aims to evoke a sense of transitioning from the somber winter into the hopeful beginnings of spring, reflecting a personal journey from adversity towards renewal and positivity.

The recording from one of my favourite sets last year ~ Transcendence Festival in Japan 🌲🇯🇵

I’ve long been drawn to the deep, organic and electrifying techno of Japan–inextricably linked to open-air gatherings deep in the forest–so it was very special to play this set in the mystical woods of Nagano’s mountains.

I played after Japanese wizard OCCA @oooccaaa, from 11.30PM-2AM ~ descending into the night and far beyond ✧.*｡⋆

From weightless ambient to brain-twisting halftime to relentless techno, she moves through sounds with the precision of someone who truly gets it. Every mix, every track she touches feels like it was put together with care, with intention. You don’t just listen—you experience it.

And this mix? You’re gonna want to sit with this one. Or better yet, stand up—because the moment you hit play, you won’t be sitting for long. It’s DJing at its finest: sharp, fluid, and impossible to ignore. The flow is effortless, the energy is undeniable. One minute, you’re locked into a hypnotic halftime groove; the next, you’re riding a wave of rolling techno that hits in all the right places. It never loses its grip. You won’t want it to.

It’s no surprise Toxido Mask holds down a residency at Tresor—she plays like she was born for it. But she’s not just shaping dancefloors; she’s shaping the scene itself, overseeing the artistic direction of OMM Transmission, the evolution of the Catharsis series.

Some mixes are good. Some are great. And then there are the ones that stay with you. This is one of those.

For this episode we welcome the extraordinary talents of Aaron J, Brooklyn's Sure Thing record label and podcast founder, known for hosting an immense list of explorative modern techno artists from around the globe. Altering our consciousness for the first time in 2023 with a particularly awe inspiring set at Sustain-Release, Aaron's deeply considered and intricate approach is something of sheer beauty, and coupled with masterful technical ability, his inspiring DJ sets allow for fully immersive dancefloor experiences. 

Here Aaron explores the softer edges of his expansive sound palette, meditative soundscapes and tranquil IDM converging in total harmony for what he describes as a 'recalibration of the senses'.

Q. What sounds or feelings did you draw upon when gathering inspiration for this mix, and what listening environments could you imagine it being best enjoyed in?

A. Of all the mixes I’ve put together over the years, this one definitely feels the most vulnerable. The months I spent thinking about and working on this mix accompanied an intensely busy time in my life, and the process helped me stay in touch with the simple joy of listening as a way of stepping back and letting things go. There is a direct connection here between the music within and the emotions that live inside me. At the same time, I’ve tried my best to mix this as transparently as possible, so that the act of DJing takes a back seat and allows the music to take center stage.

The inspiration behind the tracks I chose and the story of the mix is one of finding balance, so I hope listening to it feels like a casting off of the present day and a recalibration of the senses. I’d love for people to listen to the mix in a setting where they feel most protected from the changes and stressors of the outside world, whether that be sitting outside in nature or laying on a couch surrounded by the comforts of home.

Q. Are there any songs in the mix that you were especially excited to share, and what is it about these tracks that resonate with you so much?

A. There is a track in the mix by Autumn of Communion called “Goodbye PK” dedicated to the late Peter Kuhlmann, who many of your listeners will know as the legendary Pete Namlook of FAX +49-69/450464. It’s an immensely moving track that manages to convey both the tragedy of his loss and the depth of the beauty he left with the world, and I feel we’re so fortunate to have music and influences like this in our recent history. I included it early to set the tone of the rest of the mix, which is quite different than any I’ve done before, and to pay my respects to those who’ve inspired our scene from the very beginning.

Q. I was lucky enough to witness your set at Sustain-Release in 2023 and was in awe of your ability to practice restraint while steadily building up tension and energy in the set with such clinical and seamless execution. Is this part of the DJ craft something you spend a lot of time planning and refining?

A. That was such a life-changing moment for me, so I’m really glad you were there! You really nailed what I hoped to accomplish with that set, and I definitely spend a lot of time thinking about where my sets will begin, where I would like them to end up, and what sort of path I might take to get there. Understanding the minutiae of how a transition will affect someone’s state of mind and how to propel someone forward without jarring them back to reality is something I’m always working to improve on. That said, the upward trajectory is not always the most interesting one, and there are so many other ways of charting a course through a set that I hope to be able to explore. For the mix I’ve made for you, it’s not so much a set that builds energy as it is one that expands and contracts, hopefully in a gentle and purposeful way.

Today, we’re very pleased to welcome Italian-born, Berlin-based Midgar boss, Severja. Jacopo has been blending art and music for the past two decades. As the founder of Midgar label, he oversees both artist curation and visuals, and he's also part of Monument’s design and booking team.

His journey spans Europe, Asia, and Australia, including a stint in Taipei during the pandemic, and he's gained a reputation for hosting some of Berlin’s most talked-about parties.

For Osmura, he delivers a unique set — starting at 180 BPM and gradually slowing down through ambient and trippy dub techno, before ramping back up with d’n’b and murky steppers.

We are pleased to release a DJ Mix by Innerworld, a DJ and producer from Goa, India, who will also be performing at rural this year. Influenced by the rave culture cultivated in Goa, his meditative yet hypnotic works that move both the body and the mind are resonating with scenes around the world. Enjoy this left-field work by a notable artist who push the boundaries between deep techno, halftime, and ambient.

As a mainstay of techno for over two decades, Cio D'Or has consistently pushed boundaries, gracing the decks of revered institutions worldwide and crafting a legendary discography with releases on Prologue, Semantica, Hypnus, Time to Express and more. 

Across both mixes you will hear Cio’s unparalleled ability for sculpting minimalism and sonic architecture, masterfully recontextualizing familiar and obscure tracks alike, breathing new life into them and unveiling hidden dimensions. She dissects, reassembles and creates intricate connections between disparate sounds, all flawlessly executed with an alchemist’s touch.

Prisma 33 starts at a slower tempo, delicately building into an eruption of psychedelic minimalism. Next up in our mix series is Rotterdam-based producer, DJ and On Board Music founder Laura BCR - a vital presence both behind the decks and behind the scenes of contemporary electronic music. A former record store co-owner (Bass Cadet Records), booking agent, and head of the On Board agency and label, Laura’s dedication runs deep.

In this mix, Laura invites us into her more contemplative soundscapes, guiding us through a true evolving trip of shimmering synths and sun-kissed rhythms. It's deliberate and elegant - a lesson in patience and depth. As deep and mysterious, as it is warm and gracious. The perfect companion to stretched-out summer days, glowing nights or for inner voyages and golden hour reflections alike.
