Hypnotic Black Magic at Otsukimi Festival (29.09.23.) in Hakuba, Japan

Really excited to share with you the recording of my set at Otsukimi Festival 2023. It was such a pleasure to explore a more downtempo, but also high energy side of the sound that drives me, with some breaky and ritualistic vibes - hope you'll enjoy!

Again, huge thanks to the Otsukimi Team for all their work! It was such a magical moment to enjoy a top level festival, super well-organised with very good and interesting music, beautiful visuals and amazing people.

It was such an honour to play on the first night under the full moon in the middle of this wonderful Japanese Alps forest. Thank you again for having me and see you very soon again 🙏🏵️

HBM at Otsukimi Festival 2023

Arboraetum is the newest project of Kalumet. He returns to real chillout music with lots of live instruments, combining with new technologies, creating a special world of experimental tribal ambience. The project is so new that he doesn’t have a release yet, and only performed at Modem ’14 and Sonica ’16. Debut album is under process, this mix in the Chillum Nights series is a live act he recorded at his studio.

Kalumet is Zoltan Vajda from Hungary. One of the oldschool master of storytellers of the psychedelic trance scene. He got involved in the mid 90’s, early enough to see the spreading of trance worldwide, to witness its transforming through the 00’s to our present time. Considering this kind of possession of psychedelic experience, one can never be in doubt to have a very special time when he is playing, be it live act or DJ set.
His musical history goes back to late 80’s, when he grabbed his first accords on the guitar. The bass guitar came in a few years later, and his world of sounds slowly got a shape, influenced by Joy Division, The Clash, Suicidal Tendecies / Infectious Grooves, L.A. Style, The Overlords, U96, Kraftwerk, Front Line Assembly, Yello, Gabor Szabo, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Korai Öröm, Hardfloor, Emmanuel Top, the Ninja Tunes like Herbalizer and Coldcut, Morcheeba, then Green Nuns Of The Revolution, Quirk, X-Dream, Four Carry Nuts, the Matsuri, Dragonfly and Spirit Zone releases, Audio Active, Black Star Liner, Korsakoff, then in the beginning of the last decade, by early Iboga, ZMA, CreamCrop, Disham and Son Kite, and maybe most of all, the traditional / folk music of the whole world.

Having a wide musical culture like this, he never kept his imagination on a short leash. In fact, he is mostly known from his unmistakable manner of creating free-form fusion dance music. Since his first remix in 1998 until this 2015, he released more than hundred tracks on many labels from Chi Recordings through Kagdila, Psylife Music, BrainBusters to Horns And Hoofs, Random Records or Sangoma, he represents a very wide range of styles.

Under different names such as Ork Monk, Trevor McGregor, and Tiger Punch, he traveled through half of the world to perform in special places like a cinema in Donetsk, a laundry in Cologne, a bowling alley in Tokyo, in the catacombs of Buda Caslte, in the middle of Kanchanaburi lake near Bangkok, the mountains of Transylvania and Bulgaria, the forests of Lithuania and northern Russia, the magical beaches of Koh Phangan, jungles of Brazil, clubs of Berlin, Hamburg, Paris, London and Moscow, main stages of Ozora, Lost Theory, chill out areas of Boom, Voov, … not long ago arrived to Malta to find out what the story is there.

As Australian pleasure seekers, we are extremely fortunate to be blessed with our festival scene as colourful and vibrant as it is. We get to doof in landscapes that vary from low plateau deserts to rangelands through to rainforests. We are surrounded by fauna made up of unique creatures that embody our true native spirit. We are also extremely lucky to be exposed to our underground dance music producers, who are cut from a different cloth as well. One genius in particular brings the true essence of Australia to life, through mind blowing sound design and exquisite composition. The one and only - DOPPEL. 

This weeks premiere  'Shroud Of Sepia' just slots itself into the class above. A journey that induces visuals of old sepia photographs of flooded gum trees breathing, with vibrant colours and psychedelic grains moving with the sonic winds. A simple, yet powerful work of art by the Aussie maestro, we consider this to be Doppel's magnum opus. A track that will send goose pimples down your spine, whether you be dancing under the rain or under the shades of the eucalyptus trees, sun kissed by our famous golden sunset. 

This premiere is made more special by the collaboration with Open Records, a platform that has done extraordinary things to create and shape a sub-genre, the signature Aussie "bush techno" sound.

In 'Unknown Area,' Owl explores darker sides of ambient, halftime drum & bass, and leftfield. Our premiere for today, 'Shifting Zone' is a hypnotic, eerie halftime drum & bass driven by the powerful kick drum, haunting metallic pads, and trippy melody that creates quite an ominous atmosphere that craves dark dance floors.
