August continues its journey carrying, over the chilled summer vibes to the deeper shades of the underground electronic music and impressing us with a large number of outstanding releases. This month Johaness Paluka returns to Midgar Records under his Iron Curtis moniker with a mind-bending package; the Montreal-based Biochip debuts on the CPU Records; the Dublin-based Italian producer Lerosa has a triumphant return with his first in a eight years album; Sophia Saze unveils the second part of her continuous cassette album “Self”; Giegling affiliate Dwig returns to his own imprint with a beautifully evocative double album; Rotterdam-based imprint Nous’klaer Audio brings the endless summer vibes with their "Nous’klaer Summer Sampler 19" compilation, featuring gems from the label’s artists; Love Letters provides acid-induced retro-futuristic house excursions; Vivian Koch drops a new album on Danny Daze’s Omnidisc imprint; Futureboogie Recordings treats its listeners with their annual “Summer Riot” compilation series, and Mule Musiq continues their 15th anniversary celebration with a mesmerizing release by the Japanese producer Kuniyuki.

How emotional can you get on a dance floor? Love Letters - Cast Off is part of our decades-long exploration of this question. A stunningly confident four track EP that harnesses the power of deep rave with twisted up vocals, acid lines and techniques drawn from the best of classic house topology storming propulsively into the future. Love Letters is NY-based designer and musician Maxime Robillard whose creative process for both design and music often begins from the same consideration of function, “What is the use, what is the environment. How do I want people to move through or move to the sounds? Movement is integral to my creative process.”

Robillard goes on to share the particular story behind this EP: “This EP was made after a major accident in my life. Two of the tracks were made with both arms in a cast, and in a way this can be listened to as a love letter to my connection with this kind of music, with the community I have found on the dance floor, and with particular sounds. It acts as a document of my gratitude that after the accident I am alive and well and can still enjoy the music and world that I’ve dedicated so much of myself to.”

Today at Delayed we bring you a snapshot of the above, in the form of Biochip and a track off their debut release titled ‘Synthase’ on Sheffield based label, CPU Records. Simulated Events, our premiere for today, does exactly that, bringing forth memories of an analog time, full of warmth, highly melodic and emotional. Everything you’d ever want in a track right? All factors which piqued our interest and hopefully will yours. 
Biochip aka Melissa Speirs and Julian Kochanowski hail from Montreal and have been digging deep into a world of live recordings. The result of which, you hear before you.

Taking you deeper into the twisting realms of trippy analog and digital is our guide today, Iron Curtis. Master of many things House and Techno, Johannes Paluka aka Iron Curtis has crafted a fantastic release which has us firing on all cylinders. ‘And The Temper’ out soon on August the 9th via German label, Office Recordings is Iron Curtis’ third release on the imprint and once again joins such company as Christopher Rau, and Baaz. 

While this release is an incredibly solid four tracker, our focus for today is on the A side, 010103. A cryptic name for a seemingly cryptic track. Tensions run high as an off kilter kick and smattering of hi-hats greet the listener immediately and persist throughout, while the signature melancholic pads that we know and love here at Delayed breathe deep in the background. As the track progresses, small elements come in and out of focus, almost like appearing through a fog, elements that keep the track interesting and changing, never once falling back upon a monotonous loop...

International purveyors of the good groove, Futureboogie, notch up their eighth annual Summer Riot compilation EP this August, with an eclectic gathering of producers and tracks that fittingly encapsulate the current balmy vibes and a summer load of festivals and parties already behind us.

Techno dream-weaver, A Sagittariun, follows up his recent Futureboogie remix of Desert Sound Colony’s ‘Beta Burner’ with a hypnotic chugger, laced with the crystalline melodies that Sagi is renowned for, whilst Disco Halal regular, Kincaid, serves up some splendid 80s affected disco licks that reach for the stars.

Former Digital Justice member Liam Duggan (and one of the few Brits to release on Derrick May’s Fragile label), introduces his new project, The Red Flower Union, with a stylish yet wonky analogue workout.  

Prior releases for Cin Cin and Cutters have already brought STATUE to our attention, and ‘Ivory’ is a shining collage of live percussive work and ‘hands in the air’ piano and organ motifs, driven by its steady house rhythm.  And closing the ‘Summer Riot VIII’ release is Futureboogie regular, Neil Diablo, who yet again delivers a first class deployment of a new age Italo roller that’s packed with juicy synths and hard hitting drum machines.

Fleeing her Soviet ruled home of Tbisili at a young age with her parents, Saze grew up as a nomad living in Russia, France, Canada and the USA before finally settling down and pursuing a career in NYC. A classically trained musician and dancer, before long the Georgian turned her back on corporate life to pour her heart and soul into the arts. Becoming a diligent and versatile electronic music producer, DJ and live act, Sophia Saze is as comfortable sculpting intricate and atmospheric productions in the studio as she is decimating dancefloors with robust Techno and frenetic Breaks. 

Reflecting on her turbulent life and how it’s formed her own identity, Saze composed her aptly titled debut album, ‘Self’. Released on cassette in two instalments, ‘Part I’ dropped in June and was critically acclaimed with support from the likes of BBC 6MUSIC’s Tom Ravenscroft, Mixmag, DJ Mag, XLR8R, Resident Advisor, Future Music, Attack Magazine, TRAX, Tsugi, Ransom Note and Groove Magazine, with the latter drawing a
parallel between hers and Burial’s music.

Completing the journey, ‘Part II’ meanders through genres like Ambient, Hip Hop and Breaks, and features very personal insights including handpicked samples from Soviet television shows and VHS cassette recordings from her childhood.
Hidden allusions of her classical music education bring up distant memories and melt together the organic but thoroughly electronic ambience. Crackles, hushes and hisses are elaborated so well that the record virtually gushes over the ears like mountain torrents. It appears peaceful and quiet, then rousing and it is sparked with bewildering sounds. It lets scattered beats arise from the thicket and drown again in streams of noise. But in the end, especially the haunting seriousness of the album is compelling.
As a concept album, ‘Self’ consists of short and precise tracks mixed together, signifying a proper way to redefine a musical work in the modern age.

Mixed by commended Kingdoms label head Francis Harris, Sophia Saze’s detailed sound-design is brought to the front for an illuminating listening experience.
