With the #21DaysofVGM now becoming the #7DaysofVGM, here's my first submission for the week! We set sail on our small boat, starting slow from the shore but quickly the warm sun beats down, the waves crash against the hull, and the birds glide above. But in the ocean, not all is calm... there are dangers to be found on the water, and if you're lucky to come through the other side you can call yourself a true sailor. Please enjoy Set Sail!

#7DaysofVGM - Underwater Exploration

Day 1 of VGM Academy's 7 Days of Video Game Music Challenge! Today's challenge: Exploring the Ocean.

When imagining exploring the ocean in a game, my mind goes to something deep, dark, and blue. Very mysterious, infinite, and beautiful. In this composition I used warm, low-pitched bells to create the sense of exploring a world so open and massive yet so “closed in,” like when you feel water pressing against every inch of your body.

I had two shots of espresso today and my body really does not handle caffeine well so composing this was a strug. At least I got an idea down, though! In the future I envision this having two flutes that converse with one another, like two lovers separated by the sea.

Anyway, it’s 8pm and I feel extremely jittery still so I’m gonna go drink some water.

Using supercollider today for day 4 of the 7daysofVGM challenge. Today’s theme, Voices of the Ocean.

Recorded THREE tracks of vocals. Threw them into supercollider and did some rate changing. Called 15 events for each of the three tracks, so in all you’re hearing 45 voices!

You wake up on a wooden raft only to find that you’re in the middle of a chaotic storm on the sea. Looking ahead, all you see are crashing waves and no land in sight. You prepare yourself and hold your stance as you know what’s about to come.

I had a lot of fun with this one. Was definitely hitting a bit of a slump the past few days with this challenge but bringing in some new instruments helped to freshen things up.
