Waiting by the track, laying on the grass
Soon the train would slow, coming round the turn
Wait for the right car, run and climb the sides
Flat down on the load, we would try to hide

Heading out of town, we could now relax
We could sit on top, there would be no stops
Riding all the way, next stop at the coast
The train would slow way down, 

coming into town

We would joke and laugh, everyone would smile
It was way too cold, but we did not care
We would all get wet, all on just a dare

I read a book last month, I finished it on Tuesday
I was riding on a train, and staring at the rain
I picked it up again, I had put it down last week
I could not stand the pain, not reading for the meek

It told a story about us, every word seemed to be right
How we had let it go, and turned away at night
The time away in silence, and the stilted conversations
Limiting our topics, withdrawing our attention

I would read for a while, but had to set it down
Sometimes it brought a smile, but not so very often
At times I ploughed on, I fought my way in anguish
But it's hard to read in tears, and my will would soften
