One of the hottest new names in electronic music right now, Martin Badder has released on highly respected labels such as Crosstown Rebels, Repopulate Mars, Renaissance, Nervous Records, Strictly Rhythm, Toolroom, DFTD and more. For his debut release as part of the Jack Said What family, Badder has teamed up with pal MARIA to produce a street-real anthem for these times.
 
Over an old skool breakbeat, vocalist MARIA begins to drop bars about the dualities of inner city life. The track becomes more and more anthemic as it progresses, sitting somewhere between Little Simz and The Streets in its depiction of urban existence. MARIA doesn’t hold back with her rhymes — so understandably the label asked for a shorter, clean edit for radio play as part of the package. It’s old skool but it’s new skool.
 
‘No Two Ways About It’ is the first release on Out Yer Box, the sister label to Jack Said What. The new label has been launched to cater for non-4/4 material, whether it be ambient, trip-hop, breakbeat, guitar-driven or whatever. Out Yer Box tracks may not be in your rekordbox to play on the nightclub dancefloor, but the music is still well worth a listen in its varying shades and hues.

The original ‘Bless This Acid House’ album was released in May 2023 and was overflowing with extraordinary collaborations with original house music icons such as Marshall Jefferson, Robert Owens, Irvine Welsh and the late Sleazy D. Made with a variety of music-making analogue hardware machines, it was designed to transport you back to a time when house music was fresh, raw and underground.

A year on, this new release ‘Bless This Acid House Remixed’ does exactly what it says on the tin. Thirteen on-point, contemporary remixes of the original album tracks reworked by some of the most respected names in electronic music including Bushwacka, ITHURTZ, Jonny Aux, Black Octopus, Jon Carter, Serge Santiago, Redraft Memories & Chip-E, Transparent Sound and more. 

First out of the blocks, legendary acid house original Bushwacka takes the languid ‘Wish’ with Robert Owens and injects it with wiggly acid nitroglycerine. This dynamite cut is followed by Quinn from Paranoid London stepping up in his Jonny Aux guise for a punchy, squiggly, breakbeat-fuelled overhaul of ‘Take You There’ featuring the late Sleezy D. Jack Said What mainstay Serge Santiago takes ‘This Is Acid’ in an almost Italo direction; Transparent Sound morphs ‘Go Bang’ into a dark electro beast with a killer bassline undertow; and ITHURTZ twists timeless classic ‘One Day’ into a skippy, rubberised tech-house missive. 

Further, Jon Carter twists ‘Acid House Guys’ featuring Irvine Welsh through a glitchy techno mangle, while jackin’ house Chicago original Chip-E, alongside his mate Redraft Memories, obtain the parts to ‘Jack Said What’ — the track that gave rise to the label’s name — and take it further into the outer space technosphere. And there’s plenty more goodness in addition to these top-notch remixes, too. Shot through with an acid house sensibility, there’s sure to be a remix for a wide range of people here with any sort of interest in the culture.

Steve Mac is the artist behind the ‘Bless This Acid House’ album. A UK house music heavy-hitter, he has been a pillar of the international house community virtually from the beginning. The DJ/producer is also the label boss of Jack Said What Records in partnership with infamous Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh. With over 25 years’ experience, Steve is respected and revered for his analogue production style. Mac has also released tracks for labels such as Nervous, MoS, Cr2, Toolroom, Saved, Underwater and Ovum, and produced a number of artist albums for other people as well.

dharkfunkh BMC24 'Keeping the Vibe Alive' Mix (Tech House 31st May 2024)

Established singer-songwriter Lisa Moorish follows up the success of her recent singles ‘Sylvia’ and ‘The Hunger’ with her new drop, ‘Social Pariah’ . It’s the third single taken from her new album ‘Divine Chaos’, her first major release for 20 years, and is released on Out Yer Box, the sister label of Jack Said What, headed up by Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh. 

Lisa has already had strong radio support for her first two singles, with plays by Lauren Laverne and Chris Hawkins on BBC 6Music, Jo Whiley on Radio 2, and Gary Crowley on BBC Radio London, amongst others.

Co-written by Zoe Devlin Love (Alabama 3), the track has an eighties electronic pop influence, from a time when Lisa may have been particularly affected by the sound of Annie Lennox and Kate Bush.

Many of Lisa’s songs carry an underlying social theme which draw from life experience, and this is no different. ‘Social Pariah’ is about those people that are avoided by everyone in social situations because of betrayal or their unpopular beliefs.

“‘Social Pariah’ is a song about the outwardly charming, but inwardly treacherous, duplicitous and narcissistic type. It's about a few people that I have come across — some of whom I have observed in the public eye. Actors, politicians, musicians, journalists, establishments, and even countries… when the truth of their real agenda and behaviour is revealed.” — Lisa Moorish

Lisa Moorish first made her name in music as a teenager, when she had a club hit in 1989 with ‘Rock To The Beat’, a track written by Detroit techno luminaries Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson that fed into the UK’s acid house explosion at the time. She went on to work with the likes of Paul Weller and George Michael before being swept up in the Britpop scene and recording vocals on tracks by some of the biggest bands of that era — Oasis, Blur and Ash. She then started her own indie electro-punk band, Kill City, in the early noughties, and they were quickly snapped up by music mogul Alan McGee and signed to his new label, Poptones. 

‘Divine Chaos’ is Lisa’s first solo album for more than 20 years. The name derives from a play that she was in, The Divine Chaos Of Starry Things, where she took the lead role as the French Revolutionary, Louis Michel. The play's title and one of its themes is reflected in one of the album’s songs too — ‘This Chaos Is Divine’. “It’s also a summary and description of an all-encompassing, heady and chaotic love experience with another,” she says. “The theme of the album, mostly.”

Other songs on the album reflect a recent relationship that Lisa had that is now over. “I fell in love, I felt the demise of it happening, the desperation to hold onto a failing relationship, and then the eventual end of it. And some other songs are about my rage at the current state of the world today. Another one is about dealing with liars, manipulators, and narcissists. There’s a lot of it about!”

With this album, it feels like Lisa has gone full circle: back to working with electronic music again, the genre that she started out releasing back in the late 1980s. The songs have attitude, indicative of a life lived on both sides of the tracks. “I came from the acid house and techno scene when I started out aged 17,” she says, “and it's like a second shot at it, without the destruction, distractions, addictions, bullshit and giving a f*ck what others think or say about me.”
