After a nearly 18 year hiatus, the trailblazing indie rock quartet, Thee Volatiles, which came of age in the late 1980s underground East Village DIY club scene, has been rocking again with disarming energy and intensity.
  
Formed in a Police holding van during NYC's infamous 1988 Tompkin’s Square Riots, Dewar Macleod, Maureen Blandino and Kevin Delaney, created a sound and energy that examined post adolescence middle-class compulsion, angst and  hopes of the late ’80s and early 90s with just as much irony and self depreciation as Dylan painted the conspicuous middle-class dreams of the ’60s.
 
Returning to form is Kevin Delaney, lead guitarist and songwriter who 20 years later still spews out some of the most beautiful racket- equal parts Robert Quine art-mangle, Kiss babyfood-metal, and pure-pop trash. Dewar MacLeod an aloof anti-hero still works his trademark rasped, heart-wrenching, no-future yelp… This time around with a guitar sling low across his body like a weapon.
 
Momo Blandino, just 14 when she joined, still hammers her bass with insolence, brazenness and cheek.
 
Sitting in for the now deceased Remy Martin is David Fink, a dead ringer for an ABC After School Special “outsider,” hunched over his drums, slight frame pounding away like somebody was chasing him…He was still in short-pants the first time Thee Volatiles took audiences by storm.
 
There was never much tawdry glamor with Thee Volatiles; just raw nerves, and thankfully, we can all now start scratching once again.
