@zvrra is an avant-garde artist by anyone's standards. Her background as a video game developer has a clear influence on the music she makes. That can be anything from industrial to techno, witch house to hip hop, but most often her sounds exist in the intricate spaces in between all that. Her perfectly entitled November album Bizarroland on Avian was a fine example of that, and one united by an eerie darkness that kept you looking over your shoulder.

But this week's mix is full steam ahead through a shadowy world of grit and grime. It's a one-hour techno excursion that explores myriad different rhythms from flat-footed to floating, broken to brutal. It is unrelenting from start to finish, building the tension through a mix of texture and tempo, pulling back then going again just when it matters. It speaks of DJ with a unique sense of control and mastery of darkness.

The release of Crosstown Rebels’ SPIRITS compilation is always a bastion moment for the label. The first edition came to prominence in 2017 and we’ve been graced with an annual compilation ever since, showcasing a consistent habit to champion established artists and breakthrough ones alike. Now, Crosstown Rebels’ lauded SPIRITS series will see the light of day once more in June, with the release of SPIRITS V.

“Compiling the Spirits compilations and sourcing the artists that create the artwork for the sleeves is one of my favourite annual jobs for Crosstown. I get to sift through all the best music being sent to me and find a way to make a cohesive one stop shop full of underground battle weapons and future club hits whilst also setting the tone for the sound of the label in any given year. NYC-native Layla Benitez leads proceedings with Fides, a progressive-leaning, introspective number that retains an inherent danceability throughout. It kicks off the compilation with a driving energy, one that’s perfectly matched by Trabajar - the Crosstown Rebels debut of recent Hot Creations inductee Mr.Diamond.

A techy-inspired cut, punchy four-four drum patterns create a distinctive late-night feel, as UK-talent Denney soon arrives with Kill The Soundboy. Showcasing the groove-laced house sound with which he’s become best known, the near seven-minute piece is sure to light up many a club setting this year, paving the way for Talk To Me. It’s a collaborative venture between Munich-based artist ASK:ME and El Muerto, with Soulfoot featuring on vocals. Retaining a vintage Detroit style, the fast-paced tempo creates a natural excitement before Romanian-born mainstay GruuvElement’s gifts us the minimal-toned Boom Room.

Building with tribal-like percussion and salsa-inspired instrumentals, it’s a playful excursion into dance music’s outer realms, paving the way for young Peruvian producer Chinonegro with My Moment. Whether it be the pluck of a guitar string or a jazzy trumpet solo, there’s an inherent authenticity to the six-minute piece, as a mid-track breakdown gives way to whispering hats and a rhythmic underlying backbone. 

The penultimate offering comes from French-born, London-based regular Maglia, who serves up the enchanting Rayiys. The chirping of birds reside atop an ever-changing bassline, leaving us open and ready for the VA’s closing saga: Thanks Moon, by Spain’s I AM JAS. A heady combination of beautiful lyrical contributions combine with softly moving electronic elements, to leave us in a state of calm, inward reflection. Rounding off proceedings on a note of quietude, it reminds us of the final moments in clubland, transporting our psyche to sunrise, fond memories and everything in between.

Over a period of nineteen years, Damian Lazarus’ Crosstown Rebels has evolved into a world-renowned institution, garnering global audiences thanks to a consistent schedule of quality releases. In years since it’s earliest beginnings, the likes of Maceo Plex, Art Department, Seth Troxler, Ali Love, Mathew Jonson, Pier Bucci, Acid Pauli, Dennis Kurtel, Francesca Lombardo, Glimpse, Aphrohead, Fur Coat and a plethora of other figureheads have all found their home on the label.

Versatile in various genres such as tech house , minimal/deep tech , house and other styles with references such as Wade , Eddy M , George Privatii and Cloonee .  
Always seeking to diversify their presentations to increasingly propose remarkable experiences for the public !
The DM has shared the stage with national artists, among them: Breaking Beattz , Shapeless , André Gazzola , Tough Art , G. Felix , Classmatic , Brisotti , Cour T , Thomaz Krauze , Roddy Lima among others .

Helping me Draw the Line this week it’s  Zvrra, who’s from Chicago. Her Flow State techno EP was highly praised by the likes of Luke Slater, Inigo Kennedy, Dustin Zahn and Ben Sims. At the end of 2021, Shifted released her debut LP Bizzaroland on his Avian label. Her music also features on HBO Max’s ‘South Side’ series as well as on a HBO TV commercial. Zvrra’s shrewd selections when DJ-ing have led to guest slots on Rinse FM and Dekmantel’s popular podcast series. This is the second time she’s been on the show.

A Darker Wave, the best in underground techno, tech house, deep house and anything else we like enough to play in the show, presented by Jacki-E and P-Mac.

The guest mix in thee second hour is by Tolee, a DJ/ Producer from Berlin. He’s been producing dub & electronica since the late 90’s when his debut album “Tol. Trap” was released. Since 2020 he’s focused more on techno, using uptempo, progressive psytech beats & dark synth stabs in his productions. His most recent EP, “Join Me” was released in July 2022. He’s also a keen live performer, DJ-ing at various events and venues over the years. The mix he’s done for us consists entirely of his own tracks, most of which haven’t been released yet.

Amadeu Pretto was born in 1979 . 
He currently resides in the city of Canela in southern Brazil .
He started DJing at the age of 15 , at that time there was no cd player or mp3 , but yes the record player .
In the early 90s , he was inspired by DJs and producers Sasha & John Digweed on the album "Renaissance : The Mix Collection ".
He started his career as a DJ , in small events : weddings , graduations , however in 1999 the invitation to participate in a rave party with the name “ Cybergate ” that took place at
city ​​of Porto Alegre - Brazil . 
An exciting party with a huge audience . 
Your gender musical at that time was Trance .
Participated in some electronic music projects Around the years 2005 - 2007, he participated in the “Trance Control” project . Party that took place at Club Neo , one of the biggest nightclubs
reference of electronic music in the city .
Currently , Amadeu Pretto has as a hobby making mixed sets on social networks .

music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Throughout my childhood I drifted between instruments and genres. Piano as a child; trombone as a teenager, bass guitar through to uni - all while covering music styles from jazz, funk, disco and progressive rock. However; later in life I realised nothing was as influential as when my Dad purchased of Logic 2 for Mac and a Korg X5 MIDI keyboard in the mid-1990’s - I’d sneak into his “studio” and was fascinated by the idea of being able to play and manipulate the sounds as I please. This was my discovery of my love and passion for electronic music.
Over 20 years later, I’ve spent almost every spare moment refining my passion into a unique and defined sound that takes influence from my past (jazz, funk and progressive rock in particular) and channels it into a unique electronic sound that sits somewhere across the spectrum of disco, deep house, progressive house and melodic house & techno.

We warmly welcome Zvrra from Chicago as our first guest of relaunched Curated by Deep Space Helsinki guest mix series. She is an absolutely brilliant producer and a fantastic dj, who delivers us all a proper mix of trippy deep techno. Promoters, book her now, we want to hear more!

Bio:
Adrenaline-spiked video games have soundtracked the youth of millions global-wide for decades. Immersive worlds elevated by pulsing scores have long gripped imaginations, and Chicago techno producer, DJ and video game developer Zvrra is an artist whose dynamic craft can be credited to the console. It was Rockstar’s street racing game Midnight Club II that kick-started Zvrra’s love of techno’s sundry rhythms as the soundtrack featured a strong supply of cuts from esteemed producers.

Galvanized by her gameplay, she quickly began experimenting with her own sound. That was nearly two decades ago and Zvrra’s output has explored a multitude of genres and styles ranging from techno and house, to hip hop, dark ambient, tribal and industrial, with her being a deft hand in blending styles and crafting concept albums.

Since 2020, Zvrra has been breaking through the ranks and rising to prominence. Records such as her self-released Flow State techno EP bagged her high praise in all the right corners with Luke Slater, Umfang, Inigo Kennedy, Dustin Zahn and Ben Sims being among those to support her works. British techno linchpin Shifted is another who took notice, saving her a sought-after slot on his imprint Avian for her debut LP Bizzaroland. Released at the end of 2021, the absorbing, tension-driving nine-tracker spans ambient, techno and noise, and firmly secured Zvrra’s reputation as an artist in a world of her own in concocting distinct, intricate soundscapes. Beyond self-releases and record label dispatches, her music features on HBO Max’s South Side series as well as a TV commercial for the streaming giant.

As for DJing, Zvrra’s shrewd selections have largely been heard across the airwaves with regular guest slots on Rinse FM and The Lot, as well as being tapped by Dekmantel for its crowd-pulling podcast series. And as her productions continue to thud across dancefloors, she’s eager to clock in behind the booths of hallowed clubs and festivals worldwide.

While music production has taken precedence over video game development, in the near future fans of her sonic ammo will be able to explore her three-dimensional creations as she’s developing video games with plans to release them on Steam, Xbox and other major platforms.

Her sets are raw, immersive, and uncompromising merging hypnotic, tribal and deep techno into unforgettable sonic narratives, building deep, long form journeys from the opening kick to the last drop. From Wrocław’s concrete halls to Cairo rooftops and Berlin basements she tells stories meant to be felt, not filtered.

Jacki-E & P-Mac are influenced by techno, deep house, jungle, dnb and the ethos of the acid house raves and festivals of the early 90's.  If you listen carefully you can hear the underlying stories which have influenced them in their preference for the darker edge of electronic dance music.
Jacki-E & P-Mac write and publish their own original tracks and re-mixes, play DJ sets in clubs, at private parties and for radio shows and podcasts .
