Not to be confused with Matthew Dillon's band Windmill, this group are to all intents and purposes new when it comes to releasing music, although the project was first set up a few years ago by Mick Dolan who has since joined and left Lumin Bells, a band we've heard a few songs by and have tipped to deliver some quality material in the coming year or so. If we'd heard Windmill a little earlier than now and if we knew what other material they had in store, then they too could easily have secured themselves a spot in our Sound Of 2014 list. Windmill take a similarly rich and intriguing, folky, harmonious path but are always looking forward, not delving into trad-folk in any way in particular. In fact you'd be just as accurate describing this as dreampop.

New single 'Birdman' is an eerie number, and that's in part down to its pace and the booming executioner's drum that stays for the duration. Preventing things from becoming too dark are the excellent vocals of Dawn Williams whose inch-perfect tones are the perfect foil to the music and add a further layer of intrigue to the song. It's undoubtedly an atmospheric piece and would lend itself wonderfully to a film score - and may yet do so depending on who hears it - but if the thought of ambient music turns you off then fear not. They may muster up plenty of emotion and transport your mind to another place for a while, but at the bottom of it all is an incredibly good song that you won't find challenging or off-putting in any way; 'Birdman' will keep you engaged throughout.

 Don’t say Boca’s back; he’s never been away. Scott “Boca 45” Hendy is the Bristol UK beatsmith who’s been at the forefront of funky breakbeat music for well over a decade.

 With three solo artist albums in the bag, Pitch Sounds, Vertigo Sounds and Bombonera Sounds for labels Jalapeno, Grand Central and Unique, dancefloor devastating collabos with DJ Andy Smith as “Dynamo Productions”, and the “Beekeepers” project with rising star Parker, now has never been a better time to catch a Boca 45 fever. “Return Of The Original Dance Freaks” parts 1 & 2 sees Boca’s debut on Jack To Phono Recordings.Boca here pays homage to legendary Japaneese label Major Force (with artwork to match : ) and supplies a Disco/Hip Hop/Cut and Shut/Dancefloor monster which will keep floors shaking into 2012 and way beyond.

His love of disco, soul, funk and hip-hop jumps out of anything he touches, and it’s easy to make comparisons to fellow sample-slayers like Cut Chemist, RJD2, DJ Format and DJ Shadow.

 “Boca 45” will this year continue hitting the clubs, armed with a heaving box of 7” vinyl. Already in 2011 he’s Rocked Dancefloors around his native UK plus France, Germany, Romania, festivals such as Glastonbury and Balaton in Hungary plus a 3 date summer residency in Dubai ?!? His aim? As it has been on all his global travels and international DJ shows for the past decade, to whip crowds into a frenzy with his crazy collection of vintage vinyl gems.

Return Of The Original Dancefreaks Part 1- Boca 45

Tom Eno is back with new material this autumn. Having recorded 2 albums, one remix album and side project Mountain Folk to critical acclaim, Tom has been back in the studio and recorded the Biosphere EP. 

Having received plaudits from around the globe, Tom was expecially pleased to be included on the Cafe Delmar compilation this year. He has also featured in a Berghaus commercial and various US television shows.

What has emerged is a striking mix of psych/hip hop cut together to sound like an encyclopedia of contemporary music.  In 2010 Contaminated Waters weaved itself through various genres of music from golden era hip-hop to rock, via revered break beats, dub, and classic guitar riffs.

Here on this fresh new EP for 2011 Hendy has managed to construct another heavy nugget from the files with Cosmic Dust. The track is Bass and Beat heavy, but has riffs which Hendrix would had been proud of and all round winner which should work on dance floors and radios alike. It’s accompanied by remixes from Bristol rising star DJ Parker and Jack To Phono label mates Phase 5 Stereo.

There are  HOT brand new remixes of Contaminated Waters  from Benjamin One turning out a Flying Lotus inspired mix and Tom Eno has taken the same track back to a mid 70s rock steady number.

Contaminated Waters Part 3- Diego & The Dissidents (Tom Eno Remix)

Producer/DJ/collector/graffiti artist Upskiboo from Copenhagen, Denmark is Jack to Phono Records latest release. Upskiboo has previous releases on Melting Pot Music and continues the labels association with Denmark's varied and cosmopolitan music scene with bands such as Blue Foundation, Ghost Society and The Bass Snatchers.

"Running Like This" becomes the 30th single on Jack to Phono and is back to our roots in terms of beats. The release has echoes of the past, unearthing lost instrumentation, all part of the work and soul of Upskiboo. On the flip side Tom Eno gives the track a disco re-edit worthy of any dancefloor

Tom Eno returns to Jack to Phono to follow up his first single La Barajadura. Two Guitars is a more uptempo return to action for the green fingered Winchester wonder. The track is so named as Tom uses two guitar riffs in the melody along with his trademark percusion. The other side features the track Estrella. Both tracks retain Latin elements with masses of Spanish guitar, clicks and claps.

The version of Estrella exclusively features exciting up and coming German label Jazz & Milk. We are delighted that Dusty agreed to remix Estrella for this vinyl release. He adds Jazz & Milks bass heavy sound dusted off with some flute action! We have added the original to our download release. Tom continues to turn heads with his laidback style and will be back in the autumn with new track Tijuana featuring guest vocalist Polly Wood.

Mountain Folk is a new project on Jack to Phono Records with Rene Kirkegaard and Tom Eno. Rene is a DJ/ Producer based in Aarhus , Denmark.

 In 1997 Rene set up the record shop Dezigner Soundz which quickly became a focal point for vinyl crazy Aarhus DJs. It quickly established itself and had DJ Static running the hip hop section whilst Rene took care of electronica and house music. Rene and Tom were introduced in 2011 and started to fire ideas across the North Sea.

Tom has been busy recording acoustic material for his 2 studio albums to date and wanted to work on more electronic based project. He has recently received airplay from Steve Lamacq, Don Letts and Rob Da Bank. Once the track was finished Tom and Rene met for the second time in Wales and have recently started recording an album together. The project has been shared with Alastair Lee a film maker, he was so impressed by the track he used it in his recent film Moonflower. He was then also generous enough to release footage from Alaska for the video which will accompany the release. There are also 2 luminaries of the music world Ashley Beedle (Afrikanz on Marz) and Sundogs (Tactical Hots Records) who have remixed the track for the 12-inch release. The track has also been played on Danish National Radio in recent weeks. Tom makes his singing debut on the track and the mix of blend of the guitar style meeting Rene’s electronic world make the sound unique on JTP. An album will follow in the Autumn.

 



Don't Go Down There- Mountain Folk

Bird release a new remix package after their second release Shadows. Currently Bird are in the studio recording 3 tracks with Bill Ryder Jones. The remix package has 4 producers , Tomasu, Monochrome, In Violet and English Electric with version of all three original tracks. Tomasu has recently been featured in the Liverpool Echo and Monochrome has his own single coming out in November. 

Bird are featured in Simon Raymonde best bands of 2012 from Bella Union. They have been touring the UK extensively. Recent shows have included Tamaryn, Pins, Gravenhurst, Tim Burgess and 254. They are picking up fans all over the UK. They will be touring the UK in 2013 for the forthcoming EP Ophelia. Recent features on Amazing Radio via Shell Zenner and Simon Raymonde have added to the excitement from BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music. Dave Monks continues to back the band from their native Merseyside Introducing show. Tipped by Andy Von Pip for 2013.

Jack to Phono Records has been running since 2001 and we have released to date 25 vinyl and 9 CD albums having a following across the globe. We have focused mainly on the electronic/dance side of music to date with artists such as Beatphreak, Flevans, Phase 5 Stereo, Dr Stereo, Tombee, Diego & The Dissidents and Blue Foundation releasing with us. However we have shifted focus over the last 6 months to developing live acts with The Seal Cub Clubbing Club, The Tom Eno Project andGhost Society . The first EP released was infact "Jack to Phono and featured Mr Scruff, Treva Whateva, 777 and Blue Foundation in 2001.

We have been featured on BBC Radio One and 6 Music over the last 12 months with 3 sessions and one album becoming album of the week on 6 Music. We were featured in Craig Charles' singles of the year in 2010 and included in Drowned in Sound Top 100 singles of 2010.

Over the past 12 months we have been featured on HBO's Entourage and become the sound of Sky Sports, Ski Sunday and various BBC shows including Heroes Unmasked. We have been featured in Rabbit Moon (Nicole Kidman), the new Milka commercial and a Vicks commercial.

Over the past years we have DJ'd and put on our own events at venues such as The Big Chill Festival, Roskilde Festival, Big Chill House & Bar, The Jazz Cafe, Ruby Lounge, Sunday Best,93 Feet East, Friends and Family, The Bedford, Cargo, The Social Bar Plan B, Vega, Rust and Stengade 30.
