Dance music, when it chooses to speak, is a very self-referential genre: words are used to describe the club tableau itself or to glorify the power of the music. Antoine93's new single, “Me and the Sound” joins that later tradition. A paean to dance clubs' ability to dissolve individual personality, written in 72-point neon typeface (think The Knife at their most anthemic, without the masks), the song proves more subtle than its brash, sweat-soaked sound first suggests. 

This literally ecstatic side of musical sensuality inverts the picture given on last year's unashamedly Pop Maybe Unlock My Heart. Where previously Antoine pleaded for a partner to “show me the physical aspect of our love,” he now sings “I've never been in love / with the sound more than I have tonight...I wish I could get rid of my body, so you could forget all about me.” Antoine reminds us that just as the physicality of sound becomes the joyous decorporalization of ekstasis, the intimate anonymity of dance can become alienation, isolation, and flight. But he also reminds us of the small, all-too-personal awkward moments that come with the music's environment: “I don't like this guy who's looking at me like I'm funny or something, well I'm not laughing...the people are talking, the people are pushing, and touching my body.” With “Me and the Sound” we see an increasingly powerful songwriter demonstrate his masterful understanding that Pop's effectiveness comes from its ability to pull the sweet from the sour, and the sour from the sweet.
