When mulling which direction to go in for RA's 1000th mix celebrations, many options came to mind. Some shadowy character 2-stepping around the fringe of our collective consciousness? An impossible-level IDM icon?

All tempting. But, ultimately, we are a DJ-forward publication and this is a DJ mix series. It felt truer to the history of the RA Podcast to release deep vault material from a time when the world of niche records felt different, tighter, more discrete.

The fourth-longest mix in the series' history is an unrepeatable marathon set recorded in 2012 at a superclub that no longer exists. 2012, incidentally, is farther away from 2025 than 2012 was from 2000... if we have to clock it, so do you.

It's the coming together of one British icon who passed away in 2020, and another whose time on the road has scaled back considerably as of late. DJ Harvey agreed to exactly one b2b set in his life: this one, with Andrew Weatherall.

The night took place at Trouw, an Amsterdam club already considered legendary before it shuttered its doors in the opening hours of 2015, as part of an RA series anchored around start-to-close combinations. Harvey was at the peak of an irresistible career second act, which dovetailed with a disco revival that dominated clubs for years. Weatherall, with infinite brownie points stockpiled from the '90s, remained everyone's favourite debonair psychonaut. 

What follows is 385 scintillating minutes of arpeggiated chug and slow-cresting climaxes: a moment when the resting heart rate of dance floors plunged lower than any comparable point in the 21st century. A masterclass, entirely self-contained in audio form.

If you've got time to spare, a fun side game is sussing out who plays what. A disco-dub cover of Echo & the Bunnymen? Smart money's on Weatherall. Exuberant EQ'ing of The Isley Brothers? Gotta be Harvey. As for the low 'n slow, lightly spangled house that was all the rage in the early 2010s (think Maxxi Soundsystem, Disco Bloodbath, Rub & Tug, C.O.M.B.I. and Full Pupp), it's anyone's guess. 127 BPM feels practically like an F1 car.

When we kicked off our RA.1000 campaign, we outlined a few goals: tick off a handful of long-awaited dream guests, honour architects who shaped the world around us and deliver recordings you truly can't hear anywhere else. Full send.

DJing and the mythmaking around it has undergone a quantum leap since 2012, let alone 2006, 1996 or 1989. For those of us who were kicking around in the former, there's a creeping melancholy that our prime is fast becoming a matter of historical record. The killing moon really did come too soon. 

Where will electronic music, DJ sets or any of this be in 2044? Hard to say. Best not to overthink that one. Instead, we want to say thanks to all contributors on the series so far. Kristin Ernstsen is a prominent fixture on Oslo’s music scene, both in front and behind the decks. Between working within the city’s music industry and her presence on the dance floor, she is also Vari Loves, one of Oslo’s most fervent DJs. As Vari Loves she sculpts soulful, genre-hopping sets that take large strides between styles and sounds anchored in the deep, poignant currents of House. A regular guest to Jæger in the booth and on the dance floor, Vari Loves makes a welcomed return to the former as this week’s guest for the Jæger Mix series. 
 
Vari Loves leads us on an ebullient journey through the electronic music cosmos with sparkling hats and bubbling synths lighting our way. Wispy and tentative vocals lurk just beyond the foreground, while suggestions of a sultry summer mood flit between lethargic four-four beats. Vari Loves goes from the trudging afro-rhythms of her unknown opener to the melodic vividness of Mind Against and eventually ends the mix with a spring in its step at Peggy Gou’s bubblegum synth explosion, Itgehane. It’s a progressive mix with a distinctively sweet disposition from Vari Loves, parting clouds as it makes its way through the hour.

VL. Kristin aka. Vari Loves
 
Æ. What is your earliest memory of a piece of music? 
VL. Listening to my dad’s vinyl mid 1980s; I would listen to everything from Chicago to early Elvis stuff. Just getting to know music without any judgement. I remember the melodies gave me a buzz.
 
Æ. What sound or genre do you feel represents what you try to do through your selections?
VL. It’s hard to pick one genre, I would like to be genderless and mix it up. It’s definitely got some kind of techy, synthy feel to what I play, a hard outer with soft inner. I choose music that soothes my soul somehow.
 
Æ. What do you consider your role as DJ should be?
VL. Making a sound track to life. Give the audience music that makes us feel something, forget our daily problems or just release them. Music is amazing like that.
 
Æ. What was the theme of your mix?
VL. I tend to think of the 1 hour mix as a whole duration of a party or a night. I’ve always made mix tapes like this, start soft then by the end you are dancing!
 
Æ. Which track in your Æmix best represents the theme of your mix and why?
VL. Oh hard to answer. Every single song is important here. :)
 
Æ. What do you hope your Æmix relays to the listener?
VL. I hope it makes them feel good!
 
Æ. What’s next for you after this mix? 
VL. More gigs, more music. Looking forward to the summer really bad, longing to dance and play outside in the fresh air.

The Jaeger Mix is Oslo’s monthly ritual for deep listening and dance floor exploration, a midweek club night that doubles as a living archive of the city’s underground.
Taking place on select Wednesdays, the series pairs Jaeger resident Ivaylo with a rotating cast of DJs, producers, and live acts, capturing the sound of the night and preserving it as part of Jaeger’s ongoing story.
Each session is recorded in the club, followed by an interview with the guest, and later published as a feature on jaegeroslo.no - In this way, the Jaeger Mix lives beyond the dance floor — a document of Oslo’s electronic music culture, framed both in sound and in words.
Guiding the series is Ivaylo, a Bulgarian-born, Oslo-based DJ, producer, and curator. A long-standing Jaeger resident, label manager for Full Pupp, and founder of Lab Cleaning Jams, he has spent decades shaping Nordic club culture with his deep, soulful, and uncompromising approach to house and techno. His role in the Jaeger Mix is less about the spotlight and more about curation — weaving his own sets together with those of guests to tell the evolving story of the dance floor.
The Jaeger Mix stands as both a celebration of the present and a chronicle for the future, mapping Oslo’s nightlife one night, one mix, and one conversation at a time.
