When it comes down to taking things to the upper reaches of soul-felt house music, Roy Davis Jr is right up there with his Chicagoan mentors DJ Pierre, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Marshall Jefferson, and Lil’ Louis – people that all of us working here in our Farringdon bolt hole hold the utmost respect for. These dudes sewed the seed for house music and for the parties that take place all over the world every day. Aside from that, Davis Jr has very much built his own thing with a career that was sprouted back in the 90s and continues to the present day with ever strong releases - his 2013 album, Destroy and Rebuild which served as a statement of a new chapter for his work, continuing on with the innovation that has kept him up there in our books, included. 

Simply put, he does it for the right reasons: the love and the life, both of which he used as inspiration for this neat and exclusive promo mix that we're happy to be serving up to you today. It's a full 90 minutes of Roy Davis Jr vibes and its warming us up nicely for his set in Room One this Saturday where he'll join Move D and Craig Richards in Room One.

The night was hosted by Hot Since 82’s Labyrinth residency and we had an amazing time. Eulogising the ghetto roots of House music, stripping back arrangements to their bare functionality, Paul Johnson has carved out a unique legacy on the more provocative corners of Chicago’s House roots. Vibrant, energetic and corporeal, infused with elements of Funk, Acid, Gospel and Soul, the DJ and producer’s music and sets have stayed close to the original blueprint of the genre with 100’s of records and 6 LPs veering little from his distinctive sound. His biggest success came with “Get Get Down” in the late nineties, but records like “So Much” and  “A change is Gonna Come” and LPs like “Second Coming” have made severe impressions in House music over the last three decades.

He arrived at Jaeger and Daniel Gude’s Retro a few weeks back to bring that infectious Chicago spirit to our booth, laying down an intense and energetic set for our Thursday crowd. Skipping over tracks, from obscure acid cuts to chart topping dance music like Dennis Ferrer’s “Hey Hey,” Paul Johnson kept feeding the dance floor with infectious tracks, and even the torrential rain flowing over our tiles could hardly keep us away. We were locked on and so was our recorder, capturing the sounds that live on today through this recording.

Moving to select Wednesdays, the Jaeger mix or Æ Mix  finds a new home with resident DJ Ivaylo at the helm of his residency once again. Living beyond the immediate and documenting Jaeger’s sound, the Jaeger Mix series is a club night and a recorded mix series. Ivaylo programmes a journey into the deepest recesses of club music and beyond with selected guests, a Kodak moment in time of club music in Oslo.
