Originating from Sweden, Gidge are a duo who seek inspiration from a somewhat uncompromising environment. Cold, harsh winters leave little room for musical warmth and creativity, yet somehow the pair manage to maintain a depth and meaning to their sound which transcends far beyond their surroundings. 

The pair first met back in school at the age of 16. Rooted in the small city of Umeå Jonatan Nilsson and Ludvig Stolterman quickly became friends through a shared love of the abstract and electronic music. This would later materialise into them producing music together as the duo Gidge. This month saw the release of their second mini album on Atomnation, a record label not known for compromise or a sub standard release policy which has previously hosted music by the likes of Weval, Olaf Stuut and Sau Poler. 

We caught up with the pair on the back of the release of their latest work 'LNLNN' as they deliver a Monday mix for Ransom Note

Gidge: The 'Monday Is OK' Mix

Growing up listening to Hip-Hop, Techno and House, Swedish producer Kristian Heikkila was known more as a Hip-Hop producer than for his contributions to dance music. After a decade of producing Hip-Hop artists Kristian returned to his first love: Techno and House. 
He continued his musical journey with the influences from Hip-Hop, Acid House, D'n'b, Dub and with his own Label Konstruktion.
Besides being released on labels such as UponYou Records, AFU Lab, Credo, Gynoid Audio, Android Musiq to mention a few, he plays frequently at clubs as an Live act or DJ.

Circus' Grand leader, Yousef, played an unusual role at his last gig at London's Electric venue in Brixton. Rather than taking peak time slot, the man behind one of Liverpool's biggest nights set about a warm up set ahead of the mighty Carl Cox and by all reports, rather enjoyed the experience.  We managed to grab a recording of the two hour set and chatted to Yousef about how he approaches these things - this is one for you, all up and coming DJ's!

Yousef: “This mix is all about the art of the warm-up, something which often gets forgotten in clubland and a set I don’t get to play too often any more, not even at my own event, Circus. It’s where pretty much every DJ starts out their career (I did way back in the annexe of Cream) and it’s maybe the most important set of the night, starting the ball rolling for the evening and setting the vibe and the tempo for the DJs that play later.
At Circus I have to listen to a lot of warm-ups and play a few extended ones, and it’s definitely one of the key ingredients of what we do. You need to be able to trust someone to slowly coerce people onto the dancefloor, building the energy over a period of time rather than going for the jugular straight away. There’s nothing worse than someone banging out the tunes to an empty dancefloor ten minutes after opening, and we’ve always strived to ensure this is one of the best sets of the evening.

Playing for Carl Cox’s Revolution at Electric Brixton I saw a rare chance to do the warm-up slot away from Circus, so I asked to see if I would be able to lay down the tone of the night beforehand. This mix reflects everything I think a good warm-up set should have and it also gave me the chance to play a lot of records I don’t get to play very often; starting off deep and emotive and slowly building the pace. There’s some lovely spacey almost electronica sounds at the start, very warm, before we end up getting into some serious floor wrecking house music, all in the space of two hours.”

The rāga saga acts as a cultural collectiva of our favourite artists from all across, Each raga is an array of melodic structures with musical motifs, considered in the Indian tradition to have the ability to "color the mind" and affect the emotions of the audience and this journey (raga) comes straight from Israel from my latest find Marina @marinja aka MarinJah her sound instantly connected with me and I knew I wanted her on the saga, she was kind enough to have spread the love with us <3

Some words from a conversation with this beautiful soul-
I have travelled to India twice in this lifetime... last time was in 2016.
I miss it so much, the colors, the food and off course the MUSIC. it has this special vibration to the heart. I am sure one day I will visit again <3
Loving the deeper side of the sound with some of the ethnic vibes too.
When Im not physically traveling... music makes me mind travel..;)

Efdemin has all but perfected his deep, expertly reduced take on house and techno. The German artist has mastered his form over the course of numerous 12”s on various labels, including three albums on Dial Records. They are intricate, mind bending affairs that take you in on yourself and constantly explore new ground. His hybrid mix CD on his own Naïf imprint and Curle last year was another career high point, and recently he has turned himself towards experimental and microtonal composition with yet more fascinating results. February 2019 will see Ostgut Ton release New Atlantis, his latest album and one inspired by Francis Bacon’s unfinished 17th century novel of the same name. Promising to fuse his left-of-centre take on dance music with a new found passion for experimental sound art, it’s the latest chapter in a fascinating artistic story. 

His podcast for us is a decidedly club-focussed mix, featuring the sort of warped synths and underlapping grooves you would expect of the man. There are multi-layered tracks of percussion, sound design and stringy rhythms to start, then things slip into long, draw out passages of tunnel vision techno before the drums begin to hit harder to carry you home. At times playful, at others deadly serious, it sums up the career of Efdemin perfectly.

Listen back to a live recording from our booth with Skatebård. A week ago the Norwegian DJ stopped off at g-HA & Olanskii’s Frædag and laid down an eclectic, energetic mix in the only way he can. 2 hours of pure Skatebård ensues, with elements of House, Disco and Balearic milling around energetic 4-4 beats.

There’s a stark correlation to his own work, and even when he is not playing something from his own extensive back catalogue of original material, remixes and edits, the music is transported to the vast reaches of the cosmic realm on a bed of eighties synthesisers and galloping sequences.

Skatebård’s transitions from one tracks to the next are a marvel to behold, and going from synthetic Disco, to Synth Wave to nu-disco, there’s a very eccentric and idiosyncratic thread weaving itself through the entire set. It’s the perfect start to the weekend.

Living beyond the immediate and documenting Jaeger’s sound, the Jaeger Mix series is a club night and a recorded mix series. Ivaylo programmes a journey into the deepest recesses of club music and beyond with selected guests, a Kodak moment in time of club music in Oslo.
