It's been a long time since I posted a mix but after a [mostly] enjoyable battle I was finally able to put something together that I'm really happy with and excited to share.

I had wanted to do something a little slower for a long long time but never managed to see it through. Then about about 4 weeks ago I decided to dedicate myself to the task and spent a few hours each day over a weekend going through all of my records, picking out anything that I could get to roughly the speed I wanted and then tried to figure it out from there. And try I did. The end result, I hope you'll agree, is a slow burning backroom teaser for those looking to escape the madness of the main room and spend a little quality time with their strange uncle Slagbat. A cheeky stomper, you might say.

I would also like to give a big ups to my amazing friends who over the last 12 months recommended some of the albums that I found tracks on for this this mix. Also a big bark out to The House of Dog for being the best darn record shop/dog house there is.

SBat - Subterra - Live at Upsidedown 17.06.23

This set was recorded live on the night opening from 11pm - 1am for Subterra, something I hope will become a regular thing in Osaka (and hopefully Tokyo). It was a truly amazing night to be a part of and something I spent a lot of time thinking about and getting records together that I hoped I could piece together on the night to suck people in and set the scene for DJ Morita, Lene Andreasen and yu1 (who all played amazingly). The mix is of course a bit rough around the edges, a couple of times I zigged when I planned to zag but hopefully that adds to the charm and the journey as a whole is one you'll enjoy. I know I certainly enjoyed being there and listening back to it brings back memories of what was an incredible night that I won't soon forget.

I went back through the mix trying to piece together the tracklist so hopefully others can go forth and find more stuff by all of the amazing artists on there. I think I got them all but apologies if I missed/messed up!

2nd Hour: Sbat

Recorded in my Tokyo apartment on a couple of 1200s, a lone XDJ and my cherished FF4000 mixer, the mix was slowly put together over the course of a couple of months as I went through almost all of my collection trying to find the right records (old and new). I've always been a big fan of DJs that can keep chugging from one 100bpm obscure number to the next, all the while making all everything sound like it belongs together (e.g. Andrew Weatherall in full backroom swing) and I really wanted to try and create my own version of that where you're taken through different styles, almost without realising (I hope), but whilst keeping the focus on a late night/early morning stomp in the backroom of some weird Tokyo after hours club you probably should have left ages ago...but you didn't...and you still have a few more hours in you.

Gated Podcast 57 // SBat Part 2 // February 2024

Muzan Editions is honored to welcome SBat once more to our growing collection of mixes and sets by friends near and far. For this installment, we present SBat's ambient set at the wonderful Liminal Dreams party in Tokyo (2023.12.10). SBat conjures up a shimmering dreamscape of sounds that warps seamlessly between genre and mood, guiding the listener through nostalgic rememberances, glistening electronic futures, and hazy mirages that elude categorization. We recommend getting very comfortable and organizing some proper listening conditions before drifting off (and drifting deep) into this one.

We'd like to thank the Liminal Dreams crew for signing off on our use of Sbat's set. LD has a special place in the hearts of us here at Muzan. Not only are they an integral part of the flourishing ambient scene in Tokyo, but were kind enough to invite Endurance to their very first event - and Dérive to their latest party last month! it’s been an incredible ride this past 5 years. Thanks to all who’ve played our records. One year ago we began compiling this project to celebrate 5 years of Gruuv and we’re delighted to have 24 of our favourite producers from 10 countries contribute exclusive new music. 

As a compilation it comes in two parts, themed simply as Day and Night. The music will be released on 6 EPs every two weeks throughout the summer and features artwork from one of our favourite artists, the renowned Victoria Topping. Each EP will be released on limited edition vinyl, with a free poster and sticker inside, uniquely stamped from 001 – 500.

It's taken over 4 years and enough emotions to take down a heard of yaks to finally record a new solo mix that I'm happy with and here it is. It's a mystical tale of adventure and coming of vibes.

There's no dub techno intro here and the fucker bolts  early and pegs it towards the finishing line. I hope it hits the spot. I'm not going to put a tracklist up but feel free to ask for particular tracks and I'll try and share what I can.

On this week’s Source to Cycle, we welcome the dons of the deep, Mountain People.  Andre Schmid and Philippe Egger have been masters of the minimal deep house sound since 2006 with the release of the Mountain People project, but their collective history runs deep, with Andre behind the Rozzo pseudonym since 1994, and Philipe the man behind Serafin since the turn of the millennium.  As Mountian People, the duo have gelled together to produce some amazing house music on their Mountain People label, and also DJ together, including a spot at Ushuaia last Summer with Luciano.
So be prepared for a sophisticated ride on this weeks Source to Cycle from Mountain People.

The stalactites (Natif) are amorphous juice from the bottom of the mind, they are the seeds of confusion and irrationality and they seep through cracks in the cave and produce chaos and trembling until suddenly, out of a nightmare are born proud crystals of splendor and inspiring beauty.

Surely one of the best DJs in the game of House Music, Gene has not only presented killer mix after killer mix showcasting the immense depth of his collection, he also is a very good producer himself - constantly raising the bar on his very own "Limousine Dream" imprint.
