I recorded this one morning in a tiny hotel room, on the bed, shortly after arriving in Germany.  Chilling with the pals music, sun beams and nothing to do. Spaced out, bright, relaxed and playful. Maybe even a little longing in there somewhere. It's a nice ride. Hope ya enjoy :D

Regular Mix #1

This mix was inspired by the winter weather in Chicago, the Holiday season and by the Mannheim Steamroller Christmas album from '84. 

I recorded it in one take, but in two parts with a winter storm interlude for extra cheese. Expect some new agey vibes, jazz funk/fusion and some grown folk street soul for a bit of romance. There's also a couple 'fun' danceable moments to keep the kids happy. Mixed with love and a glass of red, hope you enjoy it in all it's honesty - Happy Holidays.

INTERVIEW WITH JACK

Hallooo: Thanks for your contribution to our mix series, how did you prepare for this mix, and how would you describe the eventual result?

Jake: I prepare for mixes the same way I prep for gigs. I begin by pulling wide, then I narrow in on a direction that I catch a vibe from. I think for many vinyl DJs the process of pulling records is both as fun as and as delicate as the act of piecing them together. For this mix I pulled some of my favorite records to listen to both at home and when I'm out gigging. As with all of my mixes, this one too is all vinyl and is recorded like a true DJ set done in one take. The mix starts with a soundtrack piece and works it's way from there up to some real 'dancing in the living room' moments. I'd say the mix is mostly chill and is quite nice for casual listening, either alone or with a few friends. 

Hallooo: Is there a record in the mix that you associate with a special story? 

Jake: Hmmm, let me think... well, I did play one of them a few times at Danny's [Bucktown, Chicago] and every time it lit up the spot. It's a downtempo Jazzdance cut, and Jazzdance can sometimes get stank face reactions, but I love playing the pieces in my collection and each time I play them out I get good reactions from open-minded dancers, and that was especially the case at Danny's. The track is 'Uptown Strut' by Arthur Blythe, a record that now rarely leaves my bag. I picked it up one morning at Wild Prairie in Chicago - great shop run by two lovely human beings - while Alex was combing through a collection he had just acquired. He kindly let me dig through it with him and this was in that lot. 

Hallooo: Walking into a record shop can be quite an intimidating experience. Do you have a digging process and/or what kind of things do you look for in a record when you’re out digging? 

Jake: The tricks of the trade are all fairly well documented by now, so I can't say that I do anything earth-shatteringly unique or anything like that, but if I have time I do try my best to not ignore the dollar bins. I'm also completely open to taking chances and seeing what happens. I've eaten shit on stacks of dollar records before, but I've also scored enough times to make it worth it. Also, I always have my phone fully charged and my earbuds on deck, as a lot of stores these days do not have proper listening stations. I also do a fair amount of digital digging, as we all do, and I take the same chances there as well. And, if you apply those filters on the ol' scogs, you can really dial in your digging. 

Hallooo: Is there a record that has continued to be in your want-list over the years? 

Jake: There are thousands that continue to be in my wantlist lol. I have been lucky to meet a few web dealers recently and one of them takes nice care of me by consistently having hot items in stock that are in my wantlist - pretty sick if I may say so myself. I scored the Dedication 7" on WEA... the one with Pictures - such a tune. One record that continues to elude me though, and a I know a few of my homies have found this for cheap, is the 'Reflections' LP by Laura Allan & Paul Horn. I know it will turn up somewhere unexpected for like $5 and when it does - it's mine! 

Hallooo: Music bonds people together. Any local heroes/parties you would like to shout out? 

Jake: Here in Phoenix where I'm at now I'd have to shout out the one and only Djentrification and in Chicago the Boogie Munsters and their affiliates. Party-wise, Night Moves and Queen in Chicago and we used to have a great party here called Grand Affair - hoping that returns in time for Spring!
